I know that it can be painful. I think *every* wedding brings out a few of these family hurts though. My cousin got engaged a couple months after I did and set her date the week after my wedding... all of my mom's side went to her wedding and not a single one of them came to mine. (Both of us live a distance from the rest of the family.) I had to let it go though. The only person who gets hurt in unforgiveness is yourself. If you start going out of your way to not be nice to people, you are going to suffer for it, not them. They probably won't even notice your efforts to not buy gifts.

In all things, Christ calls us to reflect him. Ask yourself the timeless question, what would Jesus do? He would love them anyway. He would bend over backwards to express his undying love for them. He already did actually, when he died on the cross. You need to do the same. If you let hurt and anger grow in your heart, this will hurt not just your relationship with family, but probably your marriage as well. It's NOT worth it.

Forgiveness requires action too. The Bible says to take every thought captive. When you start thinking about the wrongs done you, make a point to think of something else. Think of the price Christ paid for the wrongs you did Him. Don't speak the unforgiveness either. The more you say it, the bigger and uglier it will feel inside. Make an active decision to let go and move on. With God all things are possible.

Weddings bring out the worst in people and should be banned. I wouldn't worry about your gifts for a minute. Your marriage is what's important--not the wedding day.

As a pastor's wife and as such someone who has been to more than their share of weddings, I almost agree with this. LOL!

It is amazing the garbage that goes on at a wedding in the name of the bride (or her momma) getting the perfect day. Let me put it this way. I've seen a few bridezillas. None of that is to say the original poster is a bridezilla, but I do think people take the trappings of the wedding (which includes the tradition of gift giving) way too seriously and do not take seriously enough the marriage itself.

My husband has gotten to the point where he would much rather officiate a funeral than a wedding. People seem to get infected with goofiness when it comes to a wedding. I was the same when I was getting married, and I even tried to refrain from the goofiness. My dad was the one who quelled what my goofiness could have been. He thought a lot of things were just silliness, and he frequently said so. I wish I had listened to him more than I did. He was the only one in our family who did not get their knickers in a twist over something petty before the event was over.

He had a great time and even had some cards made up that he passed out at the reception, and if you had known my dad, you would've known he could totally pull this off. The little business cards said something like this:

I'm ______________, the Father of the Bride, and I may not be getting much attention here today, but I can guarantee there are several businesses and a bank who are keeping a close eye on me.

Back to topic.

Bzirk! I love that card. So funny. What a great dad.

I'm inclined to agree with Stella.

KatD--Thank you!
