As with the prodigal's son maybe they just need to get down to the "Wallowing with the pigs" state before they will choose to repent.

And as with the Father; we should be there to help when they do repent.

Thanks

AMEN!!
a friend...... church going friend....... was in this EXACT 1st Cor 5 situation. He knew it was wrong, knew it was hurting everyone including himself, confessed it , wanted to stop, looked for help, but just could not stop.
I gave the situation over to God, knowing that I was not getting through, watching his heart harden just a little bit more every day..... i did not turn him over to satan, he did that all on his own.

It's about people actually SEEING that they made a mistake because they actually experience the consequences.

Some people don't see that they made a mistake because others cover it up.

You do understand that what Paul did was extreme and the reason he did it was because there was a believer in the Corinthian church who was openly living in an adulterous relationship with his father's wife?

An individual does not have the authority to 'hand someone over'. This should not be done. It was a corporate body of believers involved in the sin and a corporate body of believers (with Paul approval and in fact direction) putting the person out of the church.

I think what rcjames wrote...below...was more in keeping with what that Scripture is saying. This is an extreme measure taken in the Corinthian church....a last resort....also done because the entire church was involved by allowing it to go on.

quote:

I think the whole passage that speaks to this in First Corinthians conveys the message to; Stop enabling the sin.

We all need to consider this in our relations with family (and othere).

Are we helping them; or are we enabling their contujnuance of their sin?

As with the prodigal's son maybe they just need to get down to the "Wallowing with the pigs" state before they will choose to repent.

And as with the Father; we should be there to help when they do repent.

Thanks
RC

Enabling someone's sin (Anyone's sin), by ignoring it, supplimenting it, encouraging it, or telling them thay can postphone repentacnce is wrong, wrong, wrong.

Scripture tells us to go to the person in all humility and to lead them out of the sin; not to perpetuate the sin in any form or fashion. If they respond then great you have saved a sould from death; if they do not respond then they will have to deal with the consequences.

Now that brings up the issue of how much time do we spend with folks who are not responsive?

Jesus gave the example of sending out the seventy by telling to that if they are recieved then stay and minister, if they are rejected then "Dust the sandals off" and boggie.

If we do not adhere to this, and keep on for months, years even, of trying to convince them by allowing them to continue in sin with our help; we are not helping the folks find Christ. We are greasing the rails to hell for them.

Thanks
RC

RC, I appreciate your insight and wisdom in helping me better understand in what the Bible says regarding this topic.

This is what I was trying to explain, but in laymen terms. This is what I thought the OP was trying to convey.

My response to the OP was me just trying to understand what the OP was trying to say.
