In the same vein of the great intro's and build thread, I thought of some hit songs that had great guitar solos. These were cut out from the 45 versions, but were very well done on the album versions instead. Here are 3 that come to mind: Twilight Zone-Golden Earring While the single does have a decent guitar solo, it pales in comparison to the complete album version. Shout-Tears For Fears Ok, just about the entire single was hacked short, including the great guitar solo near the end. Wild Wild West-Escape Club The single virtually cut out the guitar solo, but really sounds awesome on the long version! Lets Go Crazy-Prince Awesome guitar solo at the end of the song. Some DJ's used to joke, does this song ever end? Beat It-Michael Jackson Eddie Van Halen's playing is just simply awesome! Can you think of any excellent guitar solos in songs, whether on 45's, or on albums?

The Knack - My Sharona Yeah, it a was a pretty goofy little song (great hook), but their axeman could rip.

Okay, it's hard to stop. I love Joe Pass, Larry Carlton and several other jazz guitarists. There was this guy who toured with Chuck Mangione who was awesome. I can never remember his name, but he was just a fantastic player. If I remember his name, I'll post.

"Lowdown" by Chicago. Excelent use of the wah pedal and Kath's telly does not have the rubber band sound he used on earlier cuts like 25 or 6 to 4. "Hello" by Lionel Richie. I do not know who the guitarist was but it was one of the most tasteful solos for a soft ballad I have ever heard.

What great tone. I really liked the solo on 25 or 6 to 4, and just about everything else he played on. Mike

Just thought of a couple more: I always liked the solo in Eddie Money's "I Think I'm in Love" also, Jethro Tull "Aqualung" Mike

Had he not been in a band with 6 other musicians equal to him he probably would have been a superstar. I do like the solo on 25 or 6 to 4; his crafting of it going up and down slowly and then speeding it up phrase by phrase is brilliant. It is just the tonal setting on his Telly that bugs me no end on that solo.

Not sure who the guitarist was either, but how about "Running With the Night"; also by Lionel Richie. A couple of others: Kool & The Gang: "Tonight" Billy Ocean: "Lover Boy" - guitarist unknown Teena Marie: "Lips" - solo by the late great SRV! Power Station: "Some Like it Hot" - so the Duran Duran guys could actually play afterall ! Living Colour: "Cult of Personality" Culture Club (yeah, I know but...): "Miss Me Blind" Jody Watley: "Still a Thrill" - again, unkown guitarist, but features some very funky Tele-work. ....and many more!

Believe it or not, but "Ride Like the Wind" by Christopher Cross has a great solo at the end

Slash's solo on Sweet Child o' Mine is excellent. It's omitted for the pop radio statons. Not sure if it's that way on the 45 version.

David Gilmour in Floyd's Confortably Numb always gives me chills. Faithfully by Journey (Neal Schon wasn't taken seriously but he knew his way around a fretboard) Carry On Wayward Son - Kansas Silent Lucidity - Queensryche Still Loving You - Scorpions (Rudolf Schenker and his Flying V)

Well, if we go for stuff that did not have top 40 airplay: Erik Brann's long solo on InnaGaddaDaVida. (Iron Butterfly) And remember the guy had been playing guitar less than 6 months when that was recorded. He had been playing about 6 weeks when he got the job with the band. The dual guitar "solo" (duet?) on "Feel the Love" on The Way's Can it Be album (Maranatha 1976) Anything by Phil Keaggy Anything by Hendrix, Clapton, Duane Allman

Duane Allman's solo on Layla still gives me goosebumps. Eric Clapton--While My Guitar Gently Weeps Peter Frampton's Do You Feel Like I Do has some cool solo parts. Heartbreaker and Whole Lotta Love by Led Zeppelin
