I've never actually thought of my dream house. I know I like older homes. A friend of mine has one that was built in the 20's and it is wonderful! I love house sitting for them. They even had the clawfoot tub!

Older homes are very charming. I had a house that was built in 1911... the insulation consisted of newspaper and that's how we knew when it was built.
Soon, I'm going to get a picture of one of my favorite older houses, and maybe a few bungalows around here that I like. I guess one of the reasons I like them is because I love to decorate with antiques... they're most fitting in an "antique" house, don't you think?

My current home was built in 1910. And I do have the clawfoot tub. This house has a lot of characteristics that will be carried over into my next home. Lots of woodwork, pocket doors, high ceilings etc.

They are at the age that they like everything :) Me and cats of all ages have always had an "understanding."

GREAT thread! Interesting to read everyone's responses and the diversity of answers.
I must confess that for many years I've been one of those notorious "boomerang kids" (you know, the ones who wind up back with the parents after school?) But I realize that if my parents died tomorrow, there would be no way I could stay in the house, whether I wanted to or not. I realize that my folks won't be around forever, and that at some point I will need a place of my own. It's only been recently that I've approached the subject with more hope and less fear -- I realize I need to learn to dream a little bit.
I guess the reason why I've procrastinated for so long is that neither of the traditional options appeal to me. A regular house would be too expensive for me, plus I hate doing maintenance and yard work, etc. I'm not too crazy about a regular apartment either -- having to deal with security issues, noisy neighbors, and so forth.
If I were married (and I don't think my chances of getting married are good at this point), I wouldn't mind a nice townhouse or condo. Again, that would be if I could afford it -- I don't have the best-paying job in the world! So maybe something else -- I've been toying with the idea of a "cabin on wheels," so instead of having to "move house," I could just tow the whole thing!

there's loaded-to-the-max motor home for sale not far from me....and you don't know how many times i've thought 'that would be perfect!!' but it costs as much ore more than a house around here...and i couldn't exactly take it to visit my kids in chicago (whereever would i park the thing??? lol)...and i'd still need a lot to park it on here.
but just knowing you COULD pack up and be off at a moment's notice......that sounds awesome to me!

I've never really thought a lot about it.
I've always liked ranch style houses, but depending on the number of bedrooms that may not be practical.
The number of bedrooms would probably depend on the number of children hopefully one bedroom for each plus a master bedroom of course.
At least 3 bathrooms.
A large kitchen.
A main floor laundry room.
This will sound odd, a full basement with stairs that come down in the middle. That way the basement can be divided into 2 sides 1 for a rec room (where the stairs come down) and 1 for a lockable hobby/train room. That way if the kids have friends over the hobby/train room can be locked. I would be worried that the kids friends would have their hands where they shouldn't be in the hobby/train room if there were no adults present. I have a relatively large (and expensive) collection.
I would also like a deck or patio.

I haven't had a chance to read through all of these yet but wanted to get this down So i could come back and copy...<chuckle> . If I get married she would have to deal with it <cackle> and accept it or...there's the door!
Ok...
Log Cabin look but not necessary on the exterior. Log Cabin look inside and Victorian type on outside would be flawless! House will be close to a Lake or River in the Mountains (Scottish Highlands, Ireland, Rockies, BC, Switzerland, Austria, Germany...not super picky )
- Four bedroom, 3 bath w/ Basement & wrap around Deck/Porch
-Master bath: must be 5 piece with whirlpool tub and seperate walk in shower. The floor with ceramic tile in a rustic look (Slate type), tub trimmed out with a suitable rustic looking rock as well and the shower needs two shower heads that are adjustable and the whole thing with a rustic tile as well.
- Entry ways: Rustic Tile
- Other bathrooms: Rustic Tile
- Kitchen: Gas Fireplace with Griddle, double Drawer Dishwasher, 22cu/ft Fridge Minimum, Granite Counter Tops (Green hue with swirls of Browns and light yellows), Rustic Ceramic Tile, Sink will be a Chef type size sink, faucet over stove to fill large pots with potatoes and such and room to move the pots around, Cabinets a Teak/Mahogany with lots of knots and such.
-Living Room: Large Wood burning Fire place Framed with Rock-work (Snugglishes), Hard Wood Floors throughout house other than Tiled Areas, Vaulted Ceilings at least 12' with Wood Beams spanning accross

My dream is to live in a peasant's hut built from beams cut from the woods, and filled in with wattle and daub or possible strawbale construction. It will have whitewashed plaster walls, small-paned windows, and a green front door that opens on a wonderful fenced-in flower and herb garden. I would love to have my kids and their spouses all get together to build it. I can't imagine I will ever afford to buy land and build this, but I do spend some time thinking about it. I'm tempted by a round Celtic hut, but the idea of an open fire in the middle of the hut and really primitive bathroom facilities (like none) puts me off a bit.
