McCain just suspended the debates to return to Washington to address the economic crisis. Obama is following suit. I think I heard that the campaigning is halted until the crisis is resolved.

I just heard this and I'm not sure if I think it's a good idea or not. IMO, McCain needed to be hitting this hard on the campaign trail - explaining what's really going on and that he was warning against it for years. Granted, it's too big an issue to play politics with but I'm not sure he can afford to take the high road right now. I realize he and Obama are sitting Senators and should be in on what's being discussed. I just don't know about this move. And I don't think this is going to be "resolved" in the next four years much less in the next few days!

Here's a link to Fox News' report on the suspended campaign... McCain Suspends Campaign to Help With Bailout Obama's campaign is attempting to make it sound as if they had the idea first, it seems.

I've heard it reported twice now as McCain's idea - once on Fox News and once on our local CBS affiliate.

Drudge Report is also stating that it was McCain's idea and not Obama. They even have Obama's people saying the debate will still go on.

I find it odd that McCain would cancel a debate thinking that the bailout won't get solved without his undivided attention. He's one man. And I think a potential president should be able to handle "waiting" for a bill to sign and holding a 90 minute debate. Obama has refused to suspend the debate and I applaud him. If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Presidents multi-task all the time. And McCain guarantees and consensus by Monday? Good luck. If congress could move that fast, what has been taking them so long on every other issue? This will take at least a week. Nothing a 90 minute debate can hinder.

Why is it odd for 3 sitting senators going back to work?

Yeah, but isn't he currently a sitting Senator? As such, he can't really wait for Congress to do something right now, because he IS part of Congress... so technically yes, it *is* his responsibility to go do something about it, if they're trying to do something about it in the Senate right now. Same goes for Obama, AND Biden.

ORIGINAL: StephK Why is it odd for 3 sitting senators going back to work? Didn't Obama miss half the votes taken during his time in the Senate anyway. I guess he sees no reason to go back to DC. He's hanging out here in Tampa prepping for the debate and our weather must be downright glorious for a guy from Chicago.

Yep 0bama missed quite a few votes. I'm sure the weather is quite nice in Tampa but 0bama, Biden and McCain still have a job to do that is not part of the election process. Since none of them resigned their seats they should at least do their jobs and see what is really going on. The President is speaking tonight. What if there is more stuff fixing to hit the fan?????

Well, we're paying both of these men to go traipsing around the country for a year and a half to campaign for President as opposed to doing the job we elected them to do, so yes, I think it's a great idea for them to actually GO BACK TO WORK for a bit. But Obama puts politics ahead of what's good for the country....is anyone actually surprised by this?

Obama's forte is to vote. Not a Yea or Nay vote - Just "Present".

You cannot tell me that the "work" they do in congress is sooooooooo time consuming that even after suspending a campaign, they can't have a 90 minute debate? What kind of leadership does that exemplify? I don't know whether you guys know it or not, but there are other states represented in that congress. I'm not sure McCain or Obama has the panacean bailout plan. As far as I know, they read it and vote yay, or send it back to the drawing board. BEsides, their advisers are doing most of the work anyway. Unless they are closet economic experts.

This is a real crisis that is more important than a 90 minute debate. Actions speak louder than words. The fact is that this issue will affect whoever is in office well after the election.

They're talking about staying in session all weekend but I'll be surprised if they've got a "solution" by next week. If you know anything about Legislative procedings, they will be working around the clock and a vote could be called at just a few moment's notice virtually any time day or night if some kind of agreement is reached in the wee hours. But if they wanted to move the debates to DC maybe it would be appropriate. I'm sure McCain would be OK with that.

Well, McCain apparently believes he can get something important done by Monday. I don't know what's special about Monday, but I (like pretty much everyone) don't have the fine details of what's going on. So, I guess we'll see what was so important. Then we can decide whether it was worth missing the debate over. *shrug*

You would be wise to check out the facts before you make a comment on a thread. He did not cancel the debate. He suspended His campaign. http://www.cnn.com/ Now that shows leadership and the ability to put priorities first.

He's on TV right now definitely stressing that he called McCain this morning and initiated the talk of some stupid joint statement. It's not about making a statement! Do your job, enough with the politics and one-upmanship, and get your booty off the beach and go do your job! Oh he's infuriating.

Just what "kind of leadership" does this exemplify if they just go on about their business of getting elected - no matter what the cost to the country? Get real if you don't think that anywhere from 700 billion to close to 2 TRILLION of your and my dollars isn't particularly important.

You getting talking points? I think it's hilarious that he said he told Pelosi and Reid that this isn't the time to be adding extra stuff to this package and playing politics - yea, like those two are now taking direction from the "Junior Senator" - why do I not believe that.

I think both should go to work. I think the debate should go on. I think they both could have better attendance and voting records. ABSENTEEISM
