The first one worked for me. Just in case you cannot go to the link, here is what it says: 10.13.08 Homecoming Tribute to Jake Hess in Columbus, Georgia See photos and read about this weekend's concerts in Columbus, GA and Bossier City, LA... On Thursday, October 9, the life and music of beloved gospel music legend, Jake Hess, was celebrated both on- and off-stage in Columbus, Georgia. Jake's three children, Becky, Chris, and Jake Jr. and their families, met Bill Gaither, Mosie Lister and two vanloads of Homecoming artists at the gravesite where Jake's body rests. The weather was warm and pleasant as the group gathered on the hilltop, surrounded by a breathtaking landscape of rolling hills. Mosie, who was the best man in Jake's wedding, stood with Bill and the Hess family as Bill spoke on behalf of Jake's fellow-artists, expressing gratitude for the incredible individual who impacted so many lives in so many ways. He addressed the family numerous times and recalled Jake's abiding commitment and love for his family, as well as his innate gift for making ground-breaking music. The group of friends and family sang together and Bill closed with a prayer of thanks for Jake and his irreplaceable legacy. They lingered to capture photos and reminisce a few more minutes, then shared an incredible meal together, hosted by Jake's daughter, Becky, before heading back to the Columbus Civic Center, where the celebration would continue. Early in the concert that evening, Mayor Jim Wetherington, presented Bill with a declaration of "Gaither-Hess Day" in Columbus, which honored the gospel music tradition which Jake was so instrumental in creating, and which Bill has continued. In addition to performances by the Gaither Vocal Band and a strong line-up of Homecoming artists, the musical line-up for the evening included priceless video footage of Jake singing and enjoying his friends and family. Young artists like Ivan Parker, Tim Duncan and Jake's son, Chris, joined in on some Jake Hess favorites. Chris's big smile so resembled Jake's that he blessed the audience with a visual reminder of the legacy that lives on so powerfully now through Jake's family. The Martins sang two songs and, later in the evening, Jake Jr.'s family brought the house down with an impromptu performance which featured Jake Jr., Judy Martin-Hess, and three of their four children, Trip (Jake the third), Hannah, and Emily. Their youngest, a 12-week old little boy, was held by his aunt, Becky, at the conclusion of the concert when the entire Hess Family and the Homecoming artists joined in singing "Because He Lives." Bill sang the opening line to this newest little Hess... "How sweet to hold our newborn baby..." And the message of hope for the future seemed particularly relevant as our country faces economic uncertainty and political upheaval. This was the last of many reminders throughout the evening that those who put our hope in Christ need not panic about the future... because He is our Everlasting Hope. Both in Columbus on Thursday, as well as Friday night in Bossier City, Louisiana, Mark Lowry surprised the audiences by showing up on-stage with the Gaither Vocal Band. With Guy on sabbatical for a few weeks, Mark helped to sing the fourth part on several songs and led the way on 'Bein' Happy'...a song that he can sing like no one else. He also treated the audience in Bossier City to 'Mary, Did You Know?' Gordon Mote joined the Vocal Band and Ernie Haase & Signature Sound on 'Sweet, Sweet Spirit' and several others. The weekend was another testament to God's faithfulness on many, many levels. From the memories of Jake Hess, to the way the Vocal Band communicated, in spite of being short one member, and Wes Hampton's speedy recovery from laryngitis earlier in the week... there was rejoicing! When two or three... or 5,000... gather in His Name, HE IS in the midst of them. And never has that truth been more evident than it was this weekend. For photos taken during the graveside celebration of Jake, backstage and on-stage in Columbus, as well as the concert in Bossier City... visit Gaither.com Multimedia. If you were at the concerts in Columbus or Bossier City this weekend, we invite you to tell us about your favorite moments on the members' message boards!
