Regardless of how you feel about the bailout, Congress took a day off work for Rosh Hashanah. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!??? In the midst of an economic crisis - and after the President says our "financial security" is at stake, Congress takes a day off for Rosh Hashanah? ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!?? AMAZING.

Rosh Hashanah is about atonement, I think. They have a lot to atone for.

Would you be as outraged if yesterday was December 24 and they took Christmas Day off?

Otherwise we can assume all day long - would I be upset if I was a Jew living in Israel and the leaders took a day off in the midst of a crisis to celebrate Palm Sunday?? We're not a Jewish State - I have to work today like most other Americans, except for our leaders.

There are 43 members of the Congress and Senate that are Jewish which is 7.8%....I honestly see nothing wrong with them being in recess for two days.....I'm sure that some members are working even if they're not actually in session.....there's just nothing official going on.

Well then, lets just let the 7.8% call the shots for the 92.2%. That's the American Way, eh? quote:
I'm sure that some members are working even if they're not actually in session I'm not sure. The point is, we're in the middle of a CRISIS. If the 7.8% want to stay home and light some candles, fine. But, the other 92.2% should be "officially" working.

Actually it's more than lighting candles. Out of curiosity I have been reading up on Rosh Hashanah and it is kind of interesting what the meaning of the Holy Day is. Day of Judgment Rosh Hashanah is the Day of Judgment. On Rosh Hashanah, God opens the Books of Life and Death. Jews ask to be forgiven for their sins in the hope that God will give them a good signing in the Book of Life for the coming year. Pre-Rosh Hashanah: Slichot and Hatarat Nedarim In order to enter the new year with a clean slate, Jews ask for forgiveness and annul all vows before Rosh Hashanah. Slichot, which means forgiveness, is a series of prayers recited daily in preparation for the "Days of Awe". Rosh Hashanah Prayers: God is King Blowing of the Shofar Meaning of the Shofar The blasts of the shofar are reminiscent of: 1) The sound of a King's coronation 2) The wailing of a Jewish heart 3) A spiritual wake-up call for Jews to repent 4) Abraham's great faith in God. (Abraham bound his on Isaac, but was allowed at the last minute to sacrifice a ram in Isaac's stead.) Stopping for a couple of days isn't going to be the end of the world at this point. The world has not ended, the market is rebounding today and those who are not Jewish are working on the details of a better solution to the problem.

I suspect many members of congress are working on this, even if they are in recess. And I think no one would say a thing about it if it was Christmas, or Easter for that matter. quote:

I may understand your feelings, and we are in emergency mode worldwide of historical proportions. But it may be good to give time to the markets feel all of that..it was down and red all over and now 24h later we see some greens going on..sometimes after a huge shock is good to give opportunity to people go out, take deep breath , renew energy and than start over..I think. Hope all involved are using this time out wisely and will come up with solutions.

The United States is not a Christian nation. It was founded on Judeo-Christian principles but we are not a theocracy. This is one of the High Holy Days in Judaism. Rosh Hashanah is biblical if you want to get technical. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

What I know is that in some Christian nations do carry regular celebrations as others, plus inspired by the middle ages calendar also.Particularly when people have patrons and protections notions, and on top of that each state chosed 1 different protector of their own. The situation can become so serious that when majority day offs are mostly all Christians, all other religions around starts to complaint they want to have at least 1 day to comemorate their "patrons" or whatever they choose. Of course I am not talking about the USA reality but other Christian nations with Judeo-Christian principles, that are not a Theocracy but used to have an official church or may still have one. People around the world may end up working less because of holidays or just because of their country systems.

Would it bother anyone if it were a Muslim holiday that they would be taking off in observance of?
