We did not have time for chocolate chip cookies today. We have however made roasted chicken, roasted potatoes, onions and apples along with apple chunk bread and apple oat crisp.

Plus decorated the table, put on the chair covers, vacuumed, put out the autumn towels, put away the spring/summer ones, put out the candles, lighted some of them...these days of rest are a lot of work

Okay ladies....I ran into a bit of a dilemma today.

During Ben's spelling "pre-test" he missed two words. He was really upset. No matter what I told him, he didn't want to hear that it was okay to get something wrong or to make a mistake. I even told him about how when the postal service messes up on printing stamps it can make them very valuble. Didn't matter....he wanted me to put an "F" on his pre-test.

How do I deal with this? I don't want to go overboard, but I don't want him to feel like he can't get anything wrong.

You could stop grading things altogether, and tell him the goal is mastery. So, the words he missed (if he misses them again at all!) will just add on to next week's test to give him more practice.

For us, it's no big deal to master spelling. In fact, it's expected. So 100s are not the end-all, be-all, they are the ultimate goal for every list of words, and how long you take to get there is irrelevant.

Or you could reward with smiley faces, not on the paper as a whole, but by every word he got right. That would fill his paper with smileys, and then when he gets those two words right (as he eventually will) give them a smiley face exclamation point.

Just a couple of ideas...

My poor kids have terrible teeth!

Ds1 is so good about brushing his teeth. Yes, he has yet another cavity.

Ds2 isn't so good about brushing, yet has no cavities. BUT, when he was a toddler he had two accidents. The first he fell off the top of a Little Tike's car and jammed his upper teeth back into the gum. Shortly after the teeth came back in, he got hit in the mouth with a garden hose nozzle knocking a tooth clean out. I shoved it back in place but within 6mos or so, it died. We tried a root canal but that didn't work and the tooth had to be extracted. Here, 12yrs later, the adult tooth seems to by dying...

Ds3 at this point seems to be doing okay, although he needs braces.

Ds4 is missing an adult tooth. The baby tooth is still there, but will probably fall out within a few years so he'll need some sort of "filler" put in.

Yikes! What did I do wrong?!

I am not a "dental expert" but my hubby does not (or did not as a kid) have the best dental habits. He has NEVER had a cavity. He says it is because he was raised on a dairy farm (drinking raw milk and all that). I think some people are more prone than others, but I am just guessing!

I saw the surgeon today. He declined to do surgery. Seems I cut the tendon in my finger, which is kinda what I suspected. I get 3 weeks of pain and torture . . . umm, physical therapy . . . and then I see him again. It's that or the magic pixie dust, but he used it all up on his last patient.

Sorry there's no quicker fix, cindy.

I also like liver & onions and brussel sprouts, so maybe I'm just weird.

Then all of us are weird too ... my kids get upset the weeks we don't have that.

Cindy--well, I guess that is sorta good news. Right???

I'm about to go nuts here. I'm in taper, meaning I'm running very few miles before my marathon on Sunday. Endorphines are very addictive. A runner who isn't getting them tends to get quite cranky!!! Add to that the stress of the upcoming race! They've changed the route. Ironically, we will run past my first apartment as well as our first apartmetn. Of the six places we've live in Columbus, and to run by two of them! But, my coach and I still haven't gone over race day planning. I'm very nervous about taht. We've been playing phone tag for the past couple of days.

I love older siblings for my younger children!

I love that children really do learn by osmosis sometimes!

Our state requirements for Kindergarten are that they can count to 20 by 1's, 2's, 5's and 10's.

I have been working with my son Dustmop a little bit on writing his numbers to 10 (state requirement), but have NOT been working on his counting since he can count to 20 by 1's. Figured I'd start the others around Christmas.

Our curriculum actually wants them to count to 100 by the time they FINISH Kindergarten.

Guess who can count to 100 without being "taught"? We found it out by chance yesterday.

I was working with him on the chart and yea...with the numbers in front of him he could could to 100...pretty easy to figure out those 10's then...so for my own understanding....had him go across the room. Guess who could still do it?

Guess who counted to 110 for Dad three hours later?

Guess I need to start working on those other counting patterns......lol.

I just realized what I need to make my oldest son and his wife. A cross-stitched wedding sampler! They just got married in July. I've made several of them for other family members, now I just have to come up with a design or find one of the old ones. LOL

What would you think about pillows made in the shape of their initials for the older girls? I'm not sure if one of them has a middle name or not. I'll have to find that out.

Cindy, glad that you don't need surgery, even if you have to endure torture, I mean physical therapy. I will be praying for quick healing!!
How did you injure it? (I missed that!)

[BTW - how do you write something then cross it out?]

Will you guys say a little prayer for me?

I've applied to work at home, for the Home Shopping Network.
If I can get this job, and I pray it is God's will, then it will allow us to hold on to our house.
We haven't made this months mortgage payment, so we could really use this extra income!!!
My friend who is friends with someone at HSN told me I should get a call later this week.

Thanks for the prayer, so very much!

His, your youngest son may hang on to that baby tooth for many, many years. I still have one and I'm nearly 40. My dad had one until he was in his early 50's when it finally fell out. My sister is 25 and had 4 until highschool when one fell out. She still has the other 3 still in place. My dad paid for her to have a tooth implant to replace the missing one.

Sometimes when people have a baby tooth that doesn't come out it's because the permanent tooth is impacted. I found that out because TL had several of these and had to have oral surgery to remove the baby teeth and put a bracket on the permanent tooth to bring it into place orthodontically.

I feel like I hit the jackpot. TL needs some new clothes for cooler weather. She apparently doesn't have any warm shirts that fit her. We went to Plato's Closet. It is a resale chain that sells to the hip youth crowd. I was amazed at the racks and racks of clothing that they have. The prices were pretty good. More than say Goodwill, but all the clothing is in very good condition and selected for being in style, so it's much easier to find things. It is also very neatly organized. We got two pair of jeans, a sweater and a zipper hoodie that is really cute. We spent about $54, including tax. Not as good as say the clearance rack at Air Apostle, but still much better than if there aren't any clearance sales going on, which would describe the mall at this time. I also found a pair of pants for myself at Nordstrom Rack yesterday for $15. We are all in need of clothing around here right now. I put on weight when we were in New York, like 5lbs. This has severely impacted my clothing choices. I am now trying to get back to my semi-girlish figure.

Cynthia--ds4's adult tooth doesn't show up on x-ray so I'd say it's pretty certain it isn't there. When the baby tooth does come out we will need to do something. Although, if he's like Bagel and he's in his 40's when it comes out, he's on his own!!!

I've shopped at Plato's closet also. They are right next to Once Upon a Child. When Grandpa died last year none of the kids had anything to wear. So I zipped over there and bought dress pants and shirts, although I think the older boys ended up with dh's old dress shirts and ties. Pants were in the $5-10 range, so it wasn't that bad for a "one time wear" thing.

The other evening I went to the thift store for "throw away" clothes for the marathon. It will be 40* at the start, so I'll need something to stay warm. Once we get started, I won't need it. It's standard practice to toss warm up clothing at aid stations. They collect up these clothes and donate to charity. I ended up getting 2 technical shirts and a fleece jacket, all for about $4. However, I like everything I got and don't want to toss it!

That's interesting about tossing the clothes at the race, His, but I don't blame you for not wanting to lose your clothes.

I didn't see any men's clothing in Plato's Closet. I wonder if they have it, but I missed it. Huh. There is a Plato's Closet close to Seattle, in Tukwilla. There is also a Nordstrom Rack right in the same area. I hope to go up there in a couple of weeks looking for more warm sweaters for TL. I'm thinking that the Rack probably won't have anything yet though. They didn't seem to be behind a season, since what they have comes from their stores.

I checked my weight today. I have lost 1 1/2 lbs. Thank goodness. Maybe I can fit into some of my clothes in a couple of weeks. I'd like to lose a total of 10lbs by Christmas, then hit the after Christmas sales. If you have any money after Christmas, you can get extremely cheap clothing. There will be a ton of things for 70% off and more. I rarely buy anything full price.

There was a segment on the national news this morning about a highschool hazing among cheerleaders. Dd saw that and said, "I am so glad that I'm homeschooled!"

I've heard this comment from her a few times in the past few weeks.
