We don't use hymnals any more. The words are on the big screens. Guess they figure we don't need to see the various "parts" any more! That's a shame because I've been trying to learn tenor and it's easier for me when I can see the music.

Donna apparently hasn't noticed that we have something OTHER than the Baptist hymnal in the pew racks anyway! We use something called Celebration hymal or something, but she's right - we really don't use them. So sad. We're loosing part singing in the congregation from the under 40 crowd.

Saw the 'new' hymnal in LifeWay the other day. Wasn't too impressed. We use the old "redback" Church of God "Church Hymnal"... except ours are actually GREEN! Always thought it was funny we called 'em "redback". They were actually MAROON! We also have the older "brown" version of the "Baptist Hymnal", but I don't care for it too much. We're planning on getting a projector & screen for preservice announcements, and maybe sermon points, but I don't think I'll be using it regularly for song lyrics. I just don't like NBOT having people singing harmony! I might use it a little for a special chorus from time to time, but not routinely. I might even do some video segments to enhance a choir special, but again, that won't happen too much, either. I certainly think that these can easily be overdone, and I've always believed 'less is more' when it comes to that sort of thing.

Thank you for your responses! We have the Baptist Hymnal 1975 edition and needing to update badly. From the lifeway website they have a comparison chart of songs that were dropped and you know there would be ones we love that are dropped, there are additions I like as well of praise songs, so at this point I am undecided what to recommend, we have the maroon back book the choir uses, as well as The Inspirational book volume 11 and 12 which the choir loves to sing from. Maybe the 08 edition would be good to use since it does contain praise songs we use at the beginning of the worship song, we do not use screens with the words, etc, don't think they are ready for that as we are rural America! I love to hear from others as to what works in their church and area! God bless!

I heard a really cute Southern Gospel song a few weeks ago called "The Wall." I can't recall the singing group, but it was saying "I want to sing from the hymnal. I don't like to be singing from words on the wall (screen)." quote:

Not being Southern Baptist, I haven't seen the new Baptist hymnal, but I would like to comment on using hymnals in general. I am another who bemoans the exclusive practice of "singing off the wall". I don't mind that for openong choruses, or praise and worship, but please don't take away my hymnal. At the church I attend and lead the singing, we use two hymnals. On Sunday morning we have a "called choir", where we invite anyone who would like to come to the choir and sing. At this time we use a song book called "Songs We Love To Sing". It is a compilation of convention style songs from the annual books The Church of God (Cleveland) used to put out, and some of the older standard hymns. On Sunday nights we have congregtional singing where we use "The Church Hymnal" otherwise known as "The Redback Hymnal". When we have visitors most of them comment favorably on our use of hymnals. What I fail to understand, is that so many people seem to think it has to be all one way. We do sing some praise and worship choruses. There are instances where they are most appropriate. There also are instances where nothing can suitably replace the choir and/or congregational singing from hymnals where all the parts are utilized. There is no reason that there cannot be a mix of old and new, hymns and choruses, and I believe that they all should be where everyone can participate.

I'm a member of an SBC church. We have Baptist Hymnals but they are circa 1992. We use screens for the lyrics. I also play in our church orchestra. In order for the congregation to have the sheet music, we would need at least 3 different books in the pews to switch between - and sometimes choir octavos or collections. It's just impractical to have all those available or pause between each while people flip through the different books. A hymnal in the pew used to be nice for the handful of us that could actually read music, but they are now too limiting, IMO.

Your church sounds great. I also think there should be a mix of music. My new church has three separate Sunday morning services - a contemplative, contemporary, and traditional. That forces you to make a decision about what type of music you want. quote:

Your right Jimbo. Very few of our congregants can read music. Those that can, don't get enough practice to do it effectively. We are raising a group of worshipers that can only sing a lead line, swing and sway, and this concerns me. I have been SB for over 55 years and visit many different denominations, and have noticed that a good percentage of Wall Readers don't even participate. But as they say, this is 2008 and we must keep up with the times. I love a song book and also using the Bible. Some churches are even puting the message text on the Wall. I would like to say, "Gorbechave tear down that wall". (is that how you spell Gorbechave?)

By the way, I like your avitar.

Tear down that wall (or just keep it in the back so the choir can see it so that they don't have to memorize everything!).

As most of you know everyone in a Baptist church has an opinion and thinks they are correct! I am trying to please two groups, youth and older by blending the two types of music, the 08 hymnal appears to have that same motive by the songs, "Awesome god", "Come, now is the time to worship", I was visiting in a church in Asheville recently and they had the two praise songs, Come now is the time to worsip and in to Victory in Jesus, the music by the choir and special music was easy contemporary , while the congregation music was gospel, they had it on the wall or hymnals in the pew as well, I really liked it! Think I will actually wait until I can physically hold one in my hand before taking the plunge to purchase. I love everyones responses where I get so many ideas!

When you think about paying $15.- $22. for one hymnal, maybe it is cheaper to sing off the wall. Our church probably would have to order 800 to 1,000 hymnals. That could get expensive. But I still like a hymnal

Please explain what the "contemplative" service is about. I'm a Southern Baptist Pastor in Alabama and have never heard of this format. As for the Baptist Hymnal, we're still in the 1991 edition which was the most recent until the new one that has just come out this year. We also use a "Songs of Inspiration" maroon hymnal and a blue one (can't remember the name) and both have older convention style songs. quote:

I prefer not to use a screen for messages, but wouldn't really have a problem with song lyrics. My opinion is when the scripture is on the screen (if the minister uses scripture, sad to say) it is easy for everyone to see, of course, but I feel it encourages what I call "Biblical Illiteracy". People are being taught not to use their Bibles or even bring their Bibles to church because one is provided for them in some congregations. I think it's important that we keep folks familiar with the Scriptures and that it's ok to underline, highlight, and know where to find the answers they're seeking. God's Word becomes so much more personal this way. What we need in our churches is a Bible Revival: Jeremiah 6:16 "Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways ,and see ,and ask for the old paths where [is] the good way..." ok, 'bout to start preachin...

When you think about paying $15.- $22. for one hymnal, maybe it is cheaper to sing off the wall. Our church choir/music & worship minister is always introducing NEW songs.....(Psalm 33:3).... buying a truckload of books that would only be partially utilized? (since new hymns and songs are introduced frequently) are we to confine ourselves to sing the hymns and songs that can only be contained in ONE book? we could easily get 3,000+ hymnals..at the above listed price of $15-22 (our church seats 7,000)....then force ourselves to sing ONLY what is in that ONE book....but, does that sound right? not to me. Seems like the money could definitely be better spent elsewhere.... and, our church is quite southern baptist (our pastor even served as President of the Southern Baptist Conv. a few years back).... but, doing things, like buying Hymnals, or ANY NUMBER of things.....just because "That's the way it's always been done", isn't something our church does.

God's Word becomes so much more personal this way. our pastor puts the "key scripture" on screen as a reference (and other scripture passages as the sermon goes along).....so, instead of mentioning some passage/verse once, and everyone wondering, "did he say verse 9, or 19?", it's up there....especially for those who might take a while in finding the passage.....(not everyone is a "life long churchgoer" or theologian....plenty of those in the congregation are fairly new at bible studies and the such)..... one is provided in the pew...NOT as a "substitute" for owning one....but, for visitors and others who may not have one.... we DO have bibles (ESV version) in all of our pews (as that is the bible the pastor uses in his sermons).....but, that doesn't keep everyone from bringing their own....and, being able to look up at the screen to make sure you heard correctly what the verse is that was mentioned....and, if you happen to leave yours in the car (easy to do when you're corraling 3 kids out of the van), or find yourself at church unexpectedly on a wed. night, or some other night, there's one you can always use "in a pinch"..... we have 'pew bibles'....but, we are certainly NOT taught "not to use our bibles or even bring them to church because they are provided".....actually, quite the opposite.....
