Has anyone looked into the apparent occult symbol usage on certain christian albums. Third Day and Michael W. Smith. I haven't checked it out completely yet, but I will. If so, it could be out of ignorance, which I hope it is, or the alternative, which wouldn't be a good thing. devon and kathy

What are you saying? Michael W. Smith and Third Day are really pagans who sacrifice goats and worship trees in their basements?

I've heard this sort of thing before. I have not spent any time researching it as I don't feel it's worth it. Many web-sites that put his sort of information out are just anti-CCM anyway. They feel that the whole genre is of the devil. Now there are many reasons not to like CCM, but that is just rediculous.

Some examples would help.

Which particular albums are we talking about? Or is this just the latest rumor going around at church?

I've heard about this. Now I don't feel so strange when I'm participating in the satanic rites while listening to MWS.

Please don't tell me this tired accusation is still going around?

What's next, a post warning us about the danger of allowing our kids to listen to Motely Crue (or any other band which ceased to be commercially and culturally relevant two decades ago)?

Or maybe that good old stand by, that KISS is an acronym for Knights In Satan's Service.

Let's seee just how many anti-rock babblings we can dust off and make new!

What would happen if the people making these claims were exposed to material that actually had occultic symbols?

This is ridiculous! No such thing. It is all about association and the intent of the heart. A skull to me means good things and I associate it with the cross and subsequent new life. To someone else it may be a sinister symbol of death with no hope. Even the symbol of the cross is null and void if you don't receive the deeper message of the power in the blood. I don't think a Christian group would be singing about Christ if their intent is to share the devil. Besides the word "occult" means it is hidden or it could even talk about alchemy. Most people who talk about this don't have a clue what they are talking about. Do you think there is something hidden behind their symbol? Could you please show it to me so I could perhaps clarify for you?

The octagon shape was supposedly a symbol of the devil to the ancient Chinese.

So being a good Christian, I refuse to pay attention to "Stop" signs.

Maybe he/she is getting the idea that there are too many sensible Christians here who don't buy into superstitions about various symbol's and that any talk about spooky boogiemanishness of Christian artists will continue to be mocked?

Haha, may use that one as a defense in court. Have some old fines hanging over me. I keep telling them to lock me up. free rent and food and I will get to preach and pray for people and have a rest from work and just write. They don't usually lock people up here for fines. I would just like a day in court so I can bring the whole justice dept undone about their unjust dealings. Won't go into it now but I am serious!

At least I can give that as a reason why I don't listen to MWS other than the fact that I prefer the likes of Project 86. Saying that he's into the occult in secret gives my reasoning a more "Christian" edge.

ROTFLOL! In CA, originators of the rolling stop, we don't even know what those are!

Officer: Did you see that Stop sign back there?

The only things I've heard about this are regarding Third Day's use of the infinity symbol on the cover of "Time", and the use of a "winged disk" symbol on "Come Together" ....

...and Michael W. Smith's use of the runic alphabet on "The Big Picture", the backwards writing on the back of the same album, and on his "Christmastime" album cover , something to do with his pose conveying the same runic alphabet...

This info came from one of those "all rock, even Christian rock is evil" sites (Terry Watkins & Co.), so I take it with a grain of salt. It's quite a stretch to think that Third Day & MWS are subtly promoting the occult.

While those symbols may well be used by the occult, I don't think these guys used them for that purpose at all. The written symbol means nothing to me, it has no power, ink on paper.....the only thing that matters is the intent of the artist (or perhaps ignorance in these cases).

Either way, I'm not going to worry about it. If the music promoted occultism, then that's another story.

How about the worlds most popular occult sign? The peace sign is the symbol of an upside down broken cross that is used in satanic rituals to signify the rejection of Christ.

I am not sure if this applies or not, but back during the 80's when Steve Taylor released "I Predict 1990", a few people mistakened the album cover for a tarot card. It wasn't though by his own admission.

I just want to say that it is not funny, nor right to joke about the stop sign we have. It is a symbol of the world which we use to keep order and that shouldn't be mocked because it is there for safety reasons. Yes, I engaged a little but it was wrong of me to even entertain that.

The pictures from the Tarot came from archetypes and steps of a journey to wholeness. They are just pictures which were once used to tell a story. When they are not used to interfere with someones free will they are harmless. With occult practices it is the interference of the will which makes it wrong. It is the taking on a god other than Jesus Christ when we allow that to dictate to us our future or other people's future. When firmly placed in Jesus none of this can touch us. It is only the giving of our will or the manipulation of someone else's which makes it wrong.

Actually it is based on the semaphore flag system and the superimposed letters N and D for Nuclear Disarmament. The satanic association is urban myth. Satanism doesn't bend the cross arms downward they just put it upside down.
