I didn't recall seeing a thread dealing strictly with vinyl, so I figured I would start one since I'm a big time vinyl geek. I LOVE ME SOME VINYL! What I love most about it (being a CCM fan) is that I can go to thrift stores in the area and pick up 33s for anywhere from $.25 to $2.00 that are many times in mint condition. I've picked up every Leslie Phillips, Harvest, Sweet Comfort Band and Evie record ever released. The only problem I have had is finding Petra records for some reason...even picked up a mint copy of Mustard Seed Faith's rare 2nd album with the light blue cover (not the black). Another problem I have is my record player is pretty cheesy and I'm afraid if I play albums on it too much, it will ruin them. I just can't get enough of the pop-n-hiss of vinyl, though! Share your vinyl moments with us...

I drive my wife crazy buying vinyl (she thinks I'm sick and in need of help). I have one room pretty much full of vinyl (around 4,000 lps at last count), and it's dangerously close to spilling over into a second, which will definately put me in deep dutch with the missus. While I buy vinyl in virtually every style/genre of music, over the past few months, I've found these CCM titles: Degarmo & Key - D&K Servant - Caught In The Act of Loving Him Larry Norman - Upon This Rock Barry McGuire - Inside Out Barry McGuire - Polka Dot Bear Steve Taylor - On The Fritz (which I was especially glad to get on LP, since I've only owned it on cassette & CD) Leslie Phillips - Dancing With Danger (ditto what I said about Fritz) White Heart - Vital Signs White Heart - self titled Marty McCall & Fireworks - Go Fireworks - Fireworks Most in very nice condition, and none costing more than a buck. You just can't beat it.

I'm another vinyl fan. There was, maybe still is, a record store in Princeton that had boxes of $1 albums all along the walls. I'd spend hours combing through them. Have some Billie Holiday stuff that you couldn't find back when she was alive. I also have some great bootleg stuff, like the real, original Dylan at the Royal Albert Hall in '66 and ELP's second Works tour.

Dh and I love vinyl as well. We're babysitting a friend's collection while he gets settled. He has an immense collection of pristine albums from the mid-70s through the '90s. Basically he went out every payday he could afford it and got at least 1 record album. He has mint Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, classic rock everything. Our collection is a lot smaller. We're garage sale aficionados with a few newer (Sufjan Stevens, White Stripes) thrown in.

I have found & inherited some great vinyl...The Beatles, Michael Jackson (Thriller & Bad), Queen, Aerosmith, The Eagles, Chicago, Journey, so much more. And I love that more artists now are releasing their material on vinyl.

Has anyone had luck hooking up a turntable to your computer and recording your Vinyl to CD? I haven't spent a lot of time investigating this but I have heard that it isn't very easy to do.

ORIGINAL: stellaluna I just got rid of all my vinyl. I had a couple hundred 45s...pretty much every hit song between 1983 and 1987. (And a bunch of other stuff.) My sad vinyl story: A whole box of 12" albums got lost in one of my moves and I'm still sick over it. In the box was an album called "Shades of Indigo." I found it while cleaning out a radio station closet and it was a collection of live songs performed by the Indigo Girls. At the the time, I was a fan, so I liked having it, but the album is significant in my life for a different reason. In between each song were snippets of an interview. Amy and Emily were answering the questions, but the person asking them was a woman named Shawn Colvin. This was back in 1991 or 1992 and I didn't know who Shawn Colvin was...I just thought she was a reporter or something. But then she asked them what kind of music they listen to and one of them said they listened to her music. That sent me on a quest to find out who Shawn Colvin was. Luckily, in that same closet, I found a 12" of Shawn Colvin's "Steady On." And I became an instant fan. (That album was in the same missing box.) Anyway, "Shades of Indigo" would likely be worth a lot of money now. It was in perfect condition. I only listened to it a couple of times. <sigh> Ick! You lost an entire box? Also, I would have loved to haved that 45 collection too! I had an upwards of 400 45's before the my great record break of '88!

what a great thread !!!! Records are so much better than cds. having grown up in the vinyl era of music with LP's,,45's,,EP's,,12" maxi's,,picture disc vinyl craze of the 70's,,records off the back of "Post" cereal boxes.... My 1st 45 I ever bought was...Bobby Sherman "Little Woman" in 1970 & the 1st LP I ever bought was....Don & The Goodtimes "So Good". Vinyl has always sounded better than cds cause of vinyl's fidelity sound whereas cd's are very compressed when it comes to sound/fidelity. I can remember the only reason why cds took off like they did was because of size of convienence. if you go thru the evolution of music, vinyl has always been there.....vinyl was 1st,,then reel to reel of the 1960's,,8-tracks of the 1970's & cassettes of the 1970's thru 2000,,45 vinyl from the begining before LP's thru to the late 1980's when cassette singles became the craze,,12" Maxi's of the late 1970's thru the "New Wave' of the 1980's til the 1990's......... I have very fond memories of going to my next door neighbors house & sitting in his room for hours on end listening to records & holding that album cover in your hands & the insert reading all the lyrics & info etc... it's just not the same with listening to cd's & holding that little booklet in your hands. There is just so much more releases available on vinyl than there will ever be on cd,just go to any used record store & you'll know what i'm talking about. you have to remember to that vinyl has never really gone away. in Europe, vinyl sales has always been healthy & the clubs have always played vinyl. in fact,in Orlando Florida at "Rock N Roll Heaven",they sell new releases on vinyl but charge more than a cd release for them. now,,Best Buy stores will start carrying vinyl releases very soon with about half of their music dept.,dedicated only to vinyl. here's a link talking about new vinyl shops opening up in Los Angeles... http://www.almightyretail.com/design/newpress.php?incpage=latimes4 once you hear that Beatles LP in mono or stereo fidelity & then play the same Beatles release on cd,you'll never play the cd again. maybe some of you can remember in some 1950's model cars, they even had a 45 RPM player in the dash............................

Interesting, I am glad that vinyl is making a comeback. I loathed the idea back in the 80's when people were buying music on cassettes (even those didn't have the fullness of the LP), and then when CD's came out, they started fading out vinyl all together much to my chagrin! When CD's first came out, they called them superior to vinyl and said that they did not even skip! That was a lofty ideal.

I love me some vinyl. I only wish there were a better way to transport it. I'm a college student so I've been moving around and around the past few years and each time my tummy gets all twisted in knots worried that the vinyl will melt or somehow break if someone accidentally sets something heavy on top. I'm glad to see that current artists are also releasing vinyl though it's mainly been independent unknowns. There's something about walking into a record store that just feels right - it's like a specific smell or something..makes me get all nostalgic like even though I wasn't even around when vinyl was it. -reba.

It comes with the software, or you can download Audacity and use that.

I haven't spent a lot of time investigating this but I have heard that it isn't very easy to do. i use adobe audiotion for mine. although i'm very picky about it, i find the loudest song on the record, and while playing it, i find teh clip level, and pull the volume down just a HAIR below it. that way its still pretty bumpin', but not distored. teh best way i've found is getting an RCA-1/8" STEREO jack. (has to be stereo, or it will be in mono) and run your basic ipod/aux line from that jack to the computer line input, hit record on Audition (or whatever program you use) and let it go. when side 1 ends, i flip it over, and start side 2. when side 2 ends, i select teh enitire track, do an auto click-pop removal. remove the static noise between songs, and then highlight and save each song as an mp3. it usually takes about an hour total to do each record (if its a 45 minute record, 15 minutes to take out the bad stuff, and save each song) and it comes out sounding GREAT. i've done that with all my vinyls,a nd they all sound stellar. quote:
ORIGINAL: rebakahblam my tummy gets all twisted in knots worried that the vinyl will melt or somehow break if someone accidentally sets something heavy on top. i moved to texas for a couple years, and had to put majority of my stuff in non climate controlled storage, including a couple boxes of vinyls. when i returned to oklahoma, my stomach was in knots too, but after i got settled in my new apt, i started just playing random records, and actually found that not one single one warped, melted or anything. was it a miracle of God? i dunno. but i was surprised. i guess we are all just more worried about than we should be. the only problem i had was my underOATH - They're Only Chasing Safety record, the back cover stuck to the record underneath it's front cover, and when i pulled them apart, the UO record now has a rip on the back cover. bummer. other than that, all perfect!

When I started buying music in the early 80's it was cassettes, than I moved from there to cd's.It wasn't until sometime in the 90's that I added some vinyl and only recently (within maybe the last two years) that I bought a record player that actually works. The first record player I got was an old thing from a friend that didn't work and this one isn't that great but will do for now. My first vinyl actually goes back before the 90's to the late 70's/very early 80's, but this was just kiddie records that my parents bought me.Mostly it was non music stuff that told a story, such as Charlie Brown (my favourite of the kiddie stories). Anyway, hear is my current record selection of 12 albums.Mostly it's new wave and obscure 80's material (including some stuff I don't even like): 1. Weber and The Buzz Tones - self titled (originaly had this on cassette) 2. Spoons -Arias & Symphonies (great new wave album) 3. The Waterboys - self titled 4. David Sylvian - A Little Girl Dreams of Taking The Veil (love the album cover) 5. The Mercy Seat (basically a gospel side project of Gordan Gano of The Violent Femmes, some of it could be classified as black gospel-punk). 6. Jamboree - Meltdown 7. Propaganda - For The Footsteps and Heartbeats Of The Connoisseur 8. The Ventures - Guitar Freakout 9. Spoons - Bridges Over Borders (not so great album) 10. Terms Of Peace - Thunder Cracks (can't get into it) 11. Peter Beveridge - Grinding Wheel (prefer Blue Peter to this) 12. Legion - Evening Dance (I've heard alot better)

It's a corker. I've never checked to see if it was released on CD at some point. I'm guessing it was, though I've never seen a CD version of it. All the more reason to hang on to the vinyl. Great call.

I've been wanting this album on cd for some time and havn't seen it.That is until tonight.I just did a internet search and found a cd version on the cd universe site.It was released on cd just two months ago, May 26 2009 to be exact. I'm curious to see how they recorded the cd version. They may have kept it at the original recording level or they may have mastered it extra loud (which is quite common in older albums released on to cd these days).

Yeah, I saw today on Amazon that it was finally remastered and released on CD a few weeks ago. No wonder I've never come across it. I'll wait until I can find a used copy at a good price, I think.

Word of Warning To People Who Are Converting Vinyl or Cassette To CDS: Make sure you keep the original LP or tape. If you copy the lp or tape to a cd and then trash, give away, or sell the original on Ebay or anywhere else, you are breaking the law, technically.

I believe you are correct, but, honestly, anyone who has vinyl at this point is not going to get rid of it because they will likely never find another copy. Even rare CDs (like the indie Jars of Clay) show up on eBay every now and again, so there's always the notion that it is re-attainable. And does anyone really buy cassettes on eBay anymore? We really only burn CDs of our vinyl/cassettes in order to have a more useful medium to enjoy the music from.
