with all the debate in the current events folder over musical legacies, i thought i should give you my 3-album challenge (in truth. credit goes to my brother for coming up with it.)

here is the theory. it is very, very hard for even the best musical artists to come up with three great albums in a row. only the very best artists can accomplish this. in this challenge, "great" is defined as a 4-or5-star album.

if you hesitate when you think the album, it's disqualified. a very good 3-star album is disqualified. the rule is that it has to be three consecutive great albums of original material. no greatest hits or live albums, unless the live album is composed of songs that are not on earlier albums. you can skip over the greatest hits album or live album to make a 3-album streak.

these are my qualifiers. i confess my classic rock bias. going from least impressive to most impressive:

5. Neil Young: Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, After the Goldrush, Harvest

4. The Who : Who Sell Out, Tommy, Who's Next

3. The Beatles: Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt Pepper

2. Bob Dylan: Bringing It all back Home, Highway 61, Blonde on Blonde

1. (because they did 4 in a row) Rolling Stones: Beggar's Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile on Main St.

a lot of artists almost made the cut. plus i thought the beatles did it a second time, but i checked and saw that Yellow Submarine came out after the White Album, so that ruined their streak.

who do you think meets the challenge?

EDITED TO ADD: since people found this to be too strict, i'll loosen up/ clarify. first, instead of worrying about all-time great albums, lets just go with three great albums in a row. same rules as above, but they don't have to be albums that are on rolling stone magazine's list .

second, you can use any genre you want. it doesn't have to be rock music. if you think there's a rap or jazz or christian artist that pulled it off, offer em' up.

Impossible. For instance, Neil Young wouldn't have a song in my top 200, let alone an entire album. So that disqualifies your whole #5 list in my opinion. Same for the Stones. Not on my list at all.

This is pretty tough and I'm not sure if I understood you correctly. I thought I would give it a shot though because this sounded like a fun thing to do.

The Allman Bros. - Eat A Peach, Beginnings, and Brothers and Sisters

Pink Floyd - Animals, The Dark Side of the Moon, and The Wall

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd, Second Helping, Street Survivors, ( and I had to add) Gimme Back My Bullets

Beatles: Please Please Me, With the Beatles, Hard Day's Night

Beatles (again): Help!, Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper, White Album

Yes: The Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge

Pat Metheny Group: Pat Metheny Group, American Garage, Offramp

Piano89,

Man, that is great sentiment, and whilst I'm glad you hold Switchfoot with such high regard, uh... they are not albums that will have changed the course of musical history, they won't even break into long term memory for most, say like the Beetles, Rolling Stones or even Nirvana.

I think you missed the sequential part. For Pink Floyd the correct order would be:

The Dark Side of the Moon, (Wish You Were Here), Animals, The Wall.

Wish You Were Here is in () because you didn't include it. Obviously I just used the albums the poster used (and the one between them). So don't tell me "The Piper ..." was first, I know (:

I do like your list though. IMHO all four will work.

Albums everyone agrees on is a bit steep though. Its fun but I think it either needs to be mostly opinion based or have some sort of standard (over 4.5 stars on Amazon, Top 500 from Rolling Stone). Don't get me wrong, great topic idea but the criteria is kinda shaky as we are beginning to see.

Just curious : Wouldn't Magical Mystery Tour count? I know it was a hodgepodge of songs from that British TV special and other singles but this was the first appearance of all those songs on album. You can almost think of them as prereleased singles so I think it meets the criteria. For those unaware it goes between Sgt. Pepper & the White Album.

BTW: I'm getting all three (Pepper, Magic & Whitey) along with Abbey Road when they are rereleased (remastered with bonus stuffs) on 09/09/09.

I have to agree wholeheartedly. I can't stand one song of the Rolling Stones, Neil Young has a few ok songs, I can do without 90% of Bob Dylan, and The Who... who? As far as The Beatles go, some of their earliest stuff is fun, but they descended quickly from decent rockers to doped up wackos. The 3 albums you listed are mostly... umm... (trying to be nice)... not very good, with the exception of one or two decent songs on each album.

Now, all of that being said, it is important to note that it is only my personal opinion. Everyone will have their own subjective opinion. I don't enjoy the majority of music in the OP list. Some people do.

I have always tended to stay away from secular popular music, so my list probably wouldn't qualify under the OP requirements. I like jazz, classical, blues, Celtic, Irish folk, hymns, and a lot of other stuff way more than pop rock.

Your parameters are much too subjective.

While that may be true I think it wouldn't be fun otherwise. Objective parameters would make this too much like a research project.

Just brainstorming, here are some possibilities:

Led Zeppelin: any combo of the first 6? I'd go with 3,4,HotH myself but thats personal taste

Doors: first 3

Ramones: first 3 or 4

Michael Jackson: Off the Wall, Thriller, Bad

Iron Maiden: for metalheads: Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind, Powerslave

Just throwing those out there

Oh yeah! I forgot that one. I didn't include Beatles For Sale either. Just not a big fan of that one.

I was gonna list some Zeppelin, but couldn't find a bad one, so I'll just say all of 'em except the recent re-issues/"lost tracks" ones. There's a reason most of those tracks got "lost".

Jimi Hendrix: Are You Experienced?, Axis:Bold as Love, Electric Ladyland, Band of Gypsys.

Chicago: Transit Authority, Chicago (aka Chicago II), Chicago III (skipping Live @ Carnegie Hall which is one of the best live albums ever), Chicago IV, Chicago V.

Beatles: Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper

Stones: Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile on Main Street

The Who: The Who Sell Out, Tommy, Who's Next

Led Zeppelin: Fourth Album (it has no title that I'm aware of), Houses of the Holy, Physical Graffiti

That's all I can think of for now.

Mike

of course they're subjective. that's what makes it fun.

if you don't like my choices, that's cool. but the real challenge is figuring out it if any of your favorite artists pulled off the 3-album challenge.

i thought about Floyd, too. but i find that most people only like either animals or wish you were here, but not both. but if you want to include them, i'm game.

Off the top of my head, some of my favorite "runs" are:

Todd Rundgren - Runt, The Ballad of Todd Rundgren, and Something/Anything?
Elton John - Madman Across The Water, Honky Chateau, Don't Shoot Me
Stevie Wonder - Innervisions, Fullfillingness' First Finale, Songs In The Key of Life (really, any combination of any three of his 70s albums)
Linda Ronstadt - Heart Like a Wheel, Prisoner In Disguise, Hasten Down The Wind
Paul Simon - Paul Simon, There Goes Rhymin' Simon, Still Crazy After All These Years
Yes - The Yes Album, Fragile, Close To The Edge (I think someone already mentioned this, but I'm gonna say it again)
ELP - Tarkus, Trilogy, Brain Salad Surgery
Deep Purple - In Rock, Machine Head, Made In Japan (do live albums count?), Who Do We Think We Are? (if live albums don't count)

Yes, I'm a child of the 70s.

My bad, I wasn't putting them in order, I was just stating them as my picks. Yes, Wish You Were Here probably could be included in the group.

How about: Bad Company - Bad Company, Straight Shooter, and Run With the Pack

Neal Morse: Testimony, One, Question Mark

Petra: Never Say Die, Not Of This World, Beat The System

White Heart: Freedom, Powerhouse, Tales Of Wonder

Amy Grant: Age To Age, Christmas Album, Straight Ahead, Unguarded, The Collection, Lead Me On

I realize the Amy Grant albums don't qualify because of the timing of the Christmas album and the collection, but MAN the 80s were great for the queen of CCM! I never really considered myself an Amy fan but those were some epic albums.

I'm right there with ya regarding the Allman Brothers Band. They are my all time favorite secular band. But "Beginnings" was a compilation, and the original poster said they didnt count.

But the ABB actually recorded 4 consecutive spectacular albums...

Idlewild South, Fillmore East, Eat a Peach and Brothers and Sisters.

I myself would add Brian Johnson's first two albums (Back in Black and For Those About to Rock) to extend AC/DC's streak to--can you believe it--SEVEN. Speaking of AC/DC, I'm listening to their song "Night of the Long Knives" right now; the song is about the Nazi purge of the brown-shirted, paramilitary SA and their leader, Ernst Rohm, back in 1934.
