I have some serious whining to do today, so I'm grateful for this thread. My whine today won't make much sense to many people, and I recognize I'm way off the bell curve on this--I'm that statistical data that is so far off the statistician removes it. None of the people leading worship at our church can read music. They sing (most of the time) sad and depressing songs very slowly. They are gradually increasing their show up front, to include drums etc., and they "talk" a lot more between the songs, and I find this irritating. The music leader asked me if I would be part of music. I said no, for lots of reasons, but I didn't tell him all of my reasons, for which I'm sure he was glad to not have to hear them. 10 Reasons I Won't Join The Worship Team 1. They don't read music, so there is structure lacking and format missing and notes missing, etc. 2. I don't do music groups because of all the messy people politics that happens in music groups 3. I think church music has fostered spectator worship instead of collective worship 4. Music leaders are weird 5. Our music leader decided before we arrived at this church that there would be no more special music, ever. Then, he must have decided there would be special music but not told anyone, because he told me that no one ever asks him if they can do special music. I said, no one asks because everyone knows it's not allowed. So he says we never have it because no one asks, and so on. He doesn't get this. 6. He doesn't want the regulars on the music team doing special music. 7. He thinks if special music is had more often it won't be special music. 8. I think the term "special music" is stupid. (this is the wine thread and I get to be unreasonable, right?) 9. He believes part of worship music is to bring feeling into worship, and the more feeling the better the worship--I think this is wrong. 10. In the last couple of years, I have been the only person to do special music (and they had asked me to do it), but the music leader made the whole process so difficult that I swore to never do music there again. Okay, there is my unreasonable whine. Oh wait, one more-- 11. I wish wish wish that a church would purposefully keep music simple, and NOT aim for a bigger better show up front. And I often wish it wasn't just one leader every week, but instead a variety of people who have the talents and skills sharing and taking turns. So, what I pray for is that God will remove all of this from my mind so that these things won't bother me, because in all the areas that matter, the church we attend is absolutely great.

I have to constantly ask myself, what does God want me to do/think/feel about this, what should my attitude be? So I pray a lot during the worship, sometimes just read my Bible, and try to not think about it too much. The thing is, I think the only people who feel irritated are those of us who know how to read music and know how the music could be. I don't think anyone else notices, at least from what I can tell. I haven't asked anyone. At home every Sunday evening we sing around the piano. Our kids love it.

I don't think anyone else notices, at least from what I can tell. I haven't asked anyone. Have you been attending my last church??? Although I don't read music, I have a good ear. I have left the sanctuary and gone into an empty Sunday school room during the singing, it's almost physically painful to me to have to listen to it. Sometimes the music and the singing are not even in the same key, and they just don't seem to notice. They also sing in unison, no harmony--I've tried to harmonize at times, and had to just stop singing, becuase I could harmonize with either the music or the singing, but not both, because they were so off from one another. Most of them also cannot hold their part if someone beside them is singing harmony, so it's pretty much pointless to try to help. I've done 'specials' before, but if it isn't southern gospel they just don't get it. So I mostly sing when I'm alone. Or when I'm visiting some place that has good music.

our former pastor's son was our former worship leader. He was tone deaf, but played all the contemporary Christian songs singing LOUDLY and using about 3 chords. My dh doesn't listen to the radio, but one time I had the Christian music station on in the car and he was in shock saying 'that's how it's supposed to sound'. But he was a good kid and really tried.

Our music leader really is a good person, very kind and I know is doing his best. It's just that in most areas of church, we try to put the most skilled where they fit. In music, it doesn't work that way.

Crankius; I hear you. I'm not going to requote your whole whine, but these things ARE problems. In my own church, I am the music director. No one else reads music, including the pianist. Since she's really good at playing hymns and Southern Gospel by ear, it doesn't pose too much of a problem. But leading a choir in which only two or three people even understand about melody and harmony is a daunting task. And some of them cannot match a pitch. Further, I am not allowed to teach any new hymns. We must always only sing the ones the congregation knows. That's about 60-70 hymns. 60-70 hymns 52 Sundays times 2 services plus 52 Wednesdays. Do the math. In addition, there are some hymns which I refuse to lead because they are so unscriptural. On the subject of specials, having them every Sunday is just as painful as not having them at all. I would love it if people would volunteer...ESPECIALLY if they would volunteer because the Lord put a certain song on their hearts, AND they have rehearsed and prepared it...even a little bit. *sigh*. Well, what is, is. I work with what God gives me. I also identify with sisrev: if it ain't SG, it's just so much noise to them. No matter how scriptural, lyrically beautiful and well done it is, they may go so far as to pat me on the shoulder and say "thanks for singing". But let me or anybody sing a SG song, no matter how bad, they will hug and cry and say "that was Soooo beautiful." sheesh. shallbe

ORIGINAL: ShallbeRebuilt Actually, I have to take issue with this one. Done correctly, playing the chordal accompaniment is very fun and can be exciting, too, especially if you have a keyboard with synth patches. Doing it just right to fit the music is an art and a talent, believe me. shallbe Knock yourself out. But I was a music major and have played & arranged for our church orchestra since 1992. I'd rather watch paint dry than listen to just chords.

Our pianist and organist don't play in chords; they play the hymns straight out. This actually can cause problems for me because the harmonies I pick out aren't the harmonies they're playing, so I give up and just sing melody. Then, of course, there are all the sour notes that get hit... I think chords allow for more freedom among the singers than straight hymn-playing does.
