Earth. 2070. Excitement is brewing all around as the Federation prepares to launch it's brand new ship, the USS Debit Card. In just two days, a crew of the most elite single officers will embark on a mission to go where no single has gone before. Tonight is a special night as the Federation celebrates. It's 7:00 p.m. and a ball has been prepared for the entire crew. All invitees are mingling among themselves. Not all of the crew are there yet but they are slowly making there way in.

Kanani enters the ballroom, looks around and gives a smile.

Seeing as how Klingon's are basically space vikings, I'd hope that in my short time here I'd be able to be Lt. Ole Worf(son).

Star Date 2070.11.12

Ships log, USS Debit Card, Captain Adam Nemo reporting.

Its two days before we launch and a special celebration is taking place in Ten Forward, the ships lounge. Many Starfleet digitaries are present to help launch our ship on it's maiden voyage. I'm running late, but as I understand, it's not improper for the Captain to make a late entrance.

Our first day was filled with staff meetings and inspections, as will the next few days to come. A night a relaxation is something we all can look forward to.

Nemo Out

Captain Personal log

Star Date 2070.11.12

My first day on board, and all I've done is meet and inspect, and now I have to go to that stupid party. What I really want is to fall into bed.

At least the crew gets a chance to unwind from today before the real work starts. Little does this crew know what we are about to set out upon.

This crew, I'm not sure about this crew. I didn't pick this crew, Starfleet assigned them to me. This is the third ship I've commanded and the first time I haven't selected my crew. New faces, new names, new personalities, all untried and untested by me.

Time for me to make my appearance.

Captain out

Star Date 2070.11.12

First Officer's Personal Log: Lelandra Shell

Two days before we launch, and I'm getting ready to attend a "ball" of sorts in Ten Forward. I am debating this because I am not sure if it is right for someone of my rank to be socializing with the underlings. I guess I'll make an appearance at some point. Since we're off duty, I have to find something to wear. That pink number my mom sent me is NOT going to work, it will clash with my red hair.

Captain Nemo had about 10,000 staff meetings today. Crazy. That man is going to kill me with staff meeting after staff meeting. I'd much rather be in the holosuite going over battle formation techniques. I just know we are going to be encountering some fierce battles in space and I don't have time to go over mundane things. Like this party.

At some point I need to wander in and scare some newbies.

Ten Forward Lounge.

Captain Nemo makes his entrance into the lounge. The room is large enough to hold over a hundred people comfortably, but even now, it seems crowded. Most of those in attendance aren't part of the crew, but still...

Nemo makes note that many of his senior staff have not quite made it to the reception. He will have to send a memo about punctuality.

Nemo notices Admiral Laired, Commander of Star Fleet. Duty must take presidence, and he makes his way to the Admiral

"Admiral Laired."

Laired turns. "Nemo! I didn't expect to see you here."

"It is my command, Sir."

"Yes, but I know how you hate parties and crowds."

"Yes, but I do understand my duties."

"Well, try to enjoy yourself, you have a long voyage ahead of you, relax."

"I will try, sir."

"I know you're busy Nemo, but before you warp out of here, I want to talk to you. I'll have my assistant contact your communications officer."

"Of course, sir."

"Go get yourself something to drink, Nemo, you need to loosen up."

Ten Forward

Lelandra Shell wanders into the party, looking absolutely stunning, per usual. Almost everyone is dressed in "civilian clothes" for this party, and Lelandra is no exception. She is wearing an absolutely gorgeous knee-length deep blue velvet dress covered with sparkling rhinestones. Her red hair, which is normally tied back in a pony tail or a bun, cascades down her shoulders in soft curls.

She sure knows how to make an entrance.

She seems slightly, well, bored. She surveys the crowd, seeking someone interesting to talk to, and no one catches her eye. Since she is a Trill, some people are a bit intimidated by her. Then again, maybe it's because she's the first officer.

She leans back against the bar and surveys the crowd, a slight smile playing on her lips. A young man, probably no older than 20, walks nervously up to her, adjusting his tie.

"May I have this dance?"

He seems nervous and unsure of himself. Lelandra wonders how he got up the nerve to approach her. He would have been better off staying away. She chuckles.

"Sweetheart, you are way out of your league here."

He seems confused by that statement. He tries to be slick. "Well, you just looked lonely standing here all by yourself..."

She cuts him off. "Oh isn't that sooo cute," she says sarcastically. "As if I didn't have enough of this in ... oh... junior high. Honey, you shouldn't be trying to fraternize with me. And even if I wasn't the first officer," she notes his look of horror at his mistake and smirks, "I still wouldn't be interested. Now shoo! Go away! Hurry! Go!"

She waves him off as he scurries away. The poor kid is quite humiliated by his faux paus.

Lelandra grins.

Kanani walks in and upon closer inspection sees the Captain across the room. Being that she should address him, she walks over to him. Before she can get there, a child, a young boy stops her and say's hello.

Kanani: Why hello there young man.
Boy: Hi! My name is Peter
Kanani: It's nice to meet you Peter. My name is Kanani.
Boy: Kanani? That's a nice name. Are you from Hawaii?
Kanani: Why yes I am. Are you here with someone tonight?
Boy: Yeah. My dad is going to be on the ship. Are you going to be on it too?
Kanani: Why yes I am. I'm going to be the ship's hostess.
Boy: What position is that?
Kanani: (Chuckles) Well, I'm going to run the ship's lounge and restaurant so that everyone eats well and get's along.
Boy: Cool! Hey I'm going to be on there too!
Kanani: Oh? You are going to be with your Daddy on the ship? How old are you?
Boy: I'm 6.
Kanani: Well it's nice to meet you Peter.
Boy: You too!

Kanani waves bye and walks away. The boy Peter is smiling at her as she walks away. She finally makes it to the Captain.

Kanani: Good even Captain. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Kanani, your ship's hostess. [Kanani offers her hand for him to shake]

Captain Nemo casually walks towards the counter, when he is stopped by Kanani.

Kanani: Good even Captain. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Kanani, your ship's hostess. [Kanani offers her hand for him to shake]

Nemo: [Taking Kanai's hand] Hello, Kanani, it is a pleasure to meet you.

Kanani: How is everything going?

Nemo: Everyone seems to be enjoying themselves, you have done an excellent job preparing this reception.

Kanani: Thank you. Is there anything I can get you?

Nemo: Yes, I would like a small sprite.

Kanani: Sprite?

Nemo: Yes, an old earth soft drink. I have aquired quite a taste for it.

Kanani: I'll see what I can do.

Kanani gracefully glides behind the counter and begins to tap in codes in the ships replicators. Meanwhile Captain Nemo glances around the room and notices that his First Officer, Commander Shell has made her presence known. He debates whether or not to speak with her, his first inclination is not to, but since he will be working closely with her for the next several years, building a good repore with his senior officers is very important.

Kanani brings him his sprite, he thanks her, and then walks over to his first officer.

Nemo: Commander.

Shell comes to attention. "Captain".

Nemo: As you were commander, this is a casual gathering.

Shell: I understand.

Nemo: How are you adjusting to the ship?

Shell: I have found the accomodations adequet.

Nemo: Good. Tomorrow, after our inspection of the defense shields and the weapons arrays I would like to meet with you about personal assignments and shift schedules.

Shell: (a little uncomfortable) As you wish, Captain.

Nemo: Is there a problem Commander?

Shell: Permission to speak freely, sir.

Nemo: Go ahead.

Shell: I'm not sure I understand the need for all of these meetings.

Nemo: I see. Tell me Commander, how many of these people do you know?

Shell: None.

Nemo: How many would you trust witht your life?

Shell: None that I can think of.

Nemo: Well, since you will have to trust your crewmates with your life for the next few years, you might want to meet them and get to know them. I'll see you around, Commander. Enjoy your evening.

non-important crew cast member begins wondering why Shell has reason to not trust anyone with her life.

Crewman: Beggin' yer pard'n Cap'n Nemo sir.

Nemo: Oh, how may I help you... private... lieutenant... uhh....

Crewman: I'm just deliver'n the quadr'nt r'ports fer all anomalies and dangerous events ahead.

Nemo: Well done. Place them in my ready room and see if you can finish quickly so you can enjoy yourself tonight! We're going to be gone for an extended time.

Crewman nervously: Uh, oh, thankyou sir! Walks away hurriedly.

Nemo to Shell: What's his name again?

Shell shrugs...

Nemo to Shell: Friendly fellow, seemed a bit nervous. Perhaps we'll have to plan a few away-missions with him to boost morale.

Shell walks away from her brief meeting with Captain Nemo - yet another meeting - contemplating what he just said. She shrugs and sees a woman smiling brightly, serving drinks. Well, she could certainly use one.

"So... Umm... Cantino is it? What do you recommend?"

Doctor RAM quietly stands in front of an entertainment hologram, seemingly trying to determine it's value. A hostess approaches and offers her something refreshing to imbibe.

RAM: No, no thank you. My circuitry cannot assimilate the phosphatidyl stimulatrons of that beverage. However, can you explain this hologram to me?

Hostess: Ma'am?

The hostess was obviously taken off guard by Doctor RAM's answer, but catches her composure.

Hostess: Uh, sure. What would you like to know?

RAM: I am fascinated by humans' emotional response to this hologram, which seems to be a female and a male going through some kind of seizures, sequenced to the music. I believe they term it "dancing." However, humans at this party seem to enjoy it rather than being disturbed by the gyrations of the two participants who are apparently in distress. Look at how they jerk, spin and sling their bodies to the floor. Can you tell me why this is enjoyable to those watching?

Hostess: Er, um.... I think that couple over there is motioning to me to bring them something to drink! Excuse me!

(The hostess scurries off and noticeably butts into a group of people who are surprised by her abrupt entrance into their clique, but pick up the glasses of drinks nonetheless.)

RAM turns to a man watching the hologram.

RAM: I didn't sense anyone in that group motioning for that hostess with my gigamegamental 3D-matixial sensors."

Doctor RAM goes back to watching the dancing hologram with a puzzled expression.

Lelandra Shell grabs her drink - a tantalizing mixture of champagne and Klingon blood wine - and watches RAM bemusedly. She finds RAM hard to understand. Since Lelandra is a Trill, she has the memories of hundreds of hosts that she can access and, sometimes, be overwhelmed by. She can't relate to something that is humanoid looking but not really human at all.

RAM glances in her direction, and Lelandra just chuckles, shaking her head.

RAM notices Lelandra's amusement and wonders what the stimulus was. She walks over to the group to introduce herself, realizing that some of these officers and guests will be her responsibility on the mission. She looks around the group, then, with her most pleasant android smile which looks more like a smirk because some circuitry got crossed, says,

RAM: Greetings. It's is my extreme pleasure to introduce you to me. I'm Dr. RAM, ship's physician. I hear that this mission is unlike any that the USS Debit Card has traversed before. It's my understanding that all of the ship's crew are 'singles.' Singles... now that's an interesting word."

Lelandra looks at RAM and chuckles.

"Hello there, Toaster. You know, I wasn't too thrilled with the idea of having an android as a DOCTOR. Sure, Data turned out well and all, but what about Lore? Gee, you could be another android with an emotion chip gone all haywire. That's ALL we need. Or that Hologram doctor on Voyager, what's his name. Yeah, he was quite the winner." She rolls her eyes and notices the android's confused expression. Someone in the group nudges her angrily. She smirks.

"What, am I going to hurt its feelings or something? Computers don't have feelings. And this model," she leans in for a closer look. "Well folks, it looks like we got the discontinued one."

She smiles, quite pleased at her joke. No one else interjects, afraid to get on Shell's bad side. Finally, she turns back to RAM.

"I'm Commander Lelandra Shell, first officer."

Her expression suddenly turns serious as she takes a good whiff of the air around her.

"Do I smell something burning?"

Kanani relaxes a bit, told that she didn't have to host tonight. This is her night to celebrate and meet the rest of the crew. She sees the boy again smiling at her. She wonders just who his father is. Then she hears someone's voice.

Lelandra: Excuse me? Hi, sorry to break your concentration. I thought I would introduce myself. My name is Lelander Shell, 1s officer. And you are?

Kanani: Surprized at who she was, Oh pardon me Commander Shell. My name is Kanani, the ship's host.

Lelandra wonders what it would be like to have such a low ranking and can't imagine having to work in a lounge all day. She scans Kanani closely.

Lelandra: Please, tonight you may call me Lelandra. Satified that she gave her permission to do so So... Kanani. That's a nice name. Where are your from?

Kanani: I am from Hawaii here on earth. Um... Lelandra, I look forward to serving on the USS Debit Card. I really enjoy being the ship's hostess and I am happy to have you as our first officer. If you would forgive me, it's 9:00 and I must check to see how the rest of the hosts are doing. It was nice meeting her Lelandra.

Lelandra: Same here

Lelandra is perplexed at Kanani's comment about how much she enjoys her postition. It's as if she read her mind.

Nemo hears the sounds of the bell and realizes it's time for him to officially welcome his guest. He graciously makes his way to the dias and stands before the audience.

"Welcome ladies and gentlemen. I am happy to formaly greet you aboard the USS DEBIT CARD. As we prepare for our embarkation in just over 24 hours, I want to ask you to enjoy yourselves, greet each other, crew members, get to know each other, that's an order."

The audience laughs. As they do, Captain Nemo sniffs slightly and catchs the faint odor of smoke. He quickly catchs a glimps of Lelandra and Kanani, they both smell the same scent and quickly move to discover the source. Nemo continues to smile and procede with his welcome.

"Seriously, other than the dignataries who have graciously appeared here tonight, and who will be disembarking when the real work begins. (more laughter from the audience) the people you see around you are going to be your family for the next few years. You will be risking your lives for them and they for you, and you will be depending upon them for your safety.

"Now, eat, drink, and relax, first shift begins at zero hundred hours."

The audience politely applauds and Nemo is greeted by several members of Starfleet Brass. Finally he is able to make his way away from them and attempts to find his hostess and first officer.
