NEMO: How are you doing? Kanani sat across the table from Adam delicately picking at her food. KANANI: I’m fine, why do you ask? NEMO: I wasn’t sure if the food was bad or what. You’ve been picking at it for the last half hour and you’ve hardly eaten a thing. Is the shrimp bad? KANANI: No Adam, the shrimp is fine, the pineapple, mango is fine and the seaweed salad is fine. NEMO: Good, I thought I had lost my touch. KANANI: You haven’t lost your touch. NEMO: Then what’s on your mind? KANANI: Nothing. NEMO: You can’t fool me girl, I’ve known you too long. Something is bothering you. And two duty shifts says I know what. KANANI: I won’t take that bet. I just don’t want to talk about it. NEMO: You don’t want to talk about it, or you don’t want to talk about it with me? KANANI: A little of both I guess. I know how you feel about the subject. NEMO: Yes, you do. And why you don’t feel the same is beyond me. But that your choice. KANANI: Adam, there’s more to it than what you know. NEMO: I don’t care. KANANI: I do. NEMO: I know you do. KANANI: I could ask the same question of you. NEMO: What? KANANI: How are you doing? And don’t say fine. I know better. NEMO: I’m a starship Captain, I have to be doing fine. KANANI: You’ve just lost several crewmen, including someone you were very close to. NEMO: True, but that happens to starship Captains all the time. You deal with it. KANANI: Yes, but you were very close to Jane. The two of you were almost as close to each other as you and I are. And the same goes for Nohemi. NEMO: All three of you are special young ladies. KANANI: Thank you. But that’s not what I mean. You allowed yourself to be personally involved in their lives, to the point that you look at them like your daughters. NEMO: Is there something wrong with that? KANANI: Only when you lose one, which you have. It’s hurt you, deeply. NEMO: Yes, and why you can’t see the truth in the animal who did this baffles me. KANANI: I do see the truth in that animal. And believe it or not, I hurt because of losing Jane. But I hurt more for you. NEMO: Kanani, Nemo looks away, with a hint of a tear in his eye I don’t know how to explain it, to you or anyone. KANANI: You don’t have to. Adam, we both know how we feel about each other. You’ve been like a second father to me, even closer. There is no one who I admire more, respect more. she pauses before she speaks again There is no one who I love more than you. And I hate to see you go through this, because I do understand what you are feeling. NEMO: I suppose you do. KANANI: You know I do. Kanani leans back in her chair Have you ever thought about dating again? NEMO: Surprised by the turn in the conversation Dating? Who? KANANI: I don’t know. Anybody. Have you thought about asking a woman out on a date recently? NEMO: No. And right now that would be impossible. We are about to spend close to two years away from the Federation. The only possible candidates would be women on this ship and that would be inappropriate for a Starship Captain to be dating a member of his crew. KANANI: Non-sense. Captain’s do it all the time. And it would do you good to develop a relationship with a female you weren’t trying to remold into the perfect Starfleet Officer. NEMO: And just who should I ask out? KANANI: I don’t know. Ask Lelandra. NEMO: Shell?! Right, and get my ear sliced off on the first date because I tried to hold a door open for her. No thank you. Besides, there are enough onship romances budding as it is. KANANI: Shocked Really? How do you know? NEMO: smiling A good Captain know’s everything that happens on his ship. KANANI: Tell me, I have to know. NEMO: No, find out for yourself. KANANI: At least tell me how many. NEMO: I can tell you that there are three full fledge romances, one that’s just started to bud, and one that is so lopsided it’s not even funny. KANANI: I’ll have to be watching out for those. NEMO: Finish your dinner before it gets cold. KANANI: Adam. NEMO: Yes? KANANI: You need to talk to someone about what you’ve been through. NEMO: You mean Troy? KANANI: Troy, Father Mulcahy, Even Dr. RAM. NEMO: Would you also like me to ask someone to set me up on a date? KANANI: No, I can take care of that, just give me a few days to review over personal files. NEMO: Do that and I’ll have you running night shift for the next three months. *** Shell strode down the corridor to her quarters. Another long shift in command. Three Battle drill simulations and one hand to hand drill had left her exhausted but exhilarated. The crew was getting better, but they had a long way to go. Just as she turned the corner a blur ran right into her and knocked her on her backside. Once Shell regained her composure, she looked around and saw Ensign Phil Europe sprawled on the floor, data pads scattered all around. SHELL: You! What are you still doing on board this ship? EUROPE: struggling to get on his feet I’ve been permanently assigned to this ship, Ma’am. SHELL: Doing what? Are you the official senior staff bouncer? EUROPE: No, Ma’am. I’m assigned to engineering. SHELL: Engineering? Please tell me your duties are to sweep the floor. EUROPE: No, Ma’am. I monitor the warp core magnetic field and plasma exhaust flow. SHELL: It’s amazing we haven’t blown up yet. Get this mess cleaned up and get to where you are supposed to be, little one. EUROPE: Yes, ma’am. Shell storms off in the wrong direction

Markov and Brenda walked briskly down the corridor toward conference room 3. The Captain was waiting for their updated plans for the Delta Flyer. Markov: I still sssay we should mrrakee two different shipppss. Brenda: The Captain wants one. And when the Captain wants one type of fighter, the Captain gets one type of fighter. When you're the Commanding officer of a starship, you can make all the fighters you want in any style you want. Markov: Rrrrrrrr. Brenda stood before Nemo with the plans of the new Delta Flyer on a medium sized view screen Brenda: As you can see, Captain, by removing the scientific equipment, two of the crew quarters, and using the cargo hatches to house extra equipment, we were able to modify the shields so that the ship is protected better. We were also able to enhance the weapons and warp engine. Each ship is capable of Warp 7 for over three days, and they will be much more manuverable than the original design, and faster while running impulse engines. Nemo: I noticed you changed the cockpit. Brenda: Yes, the pilot sits alone at the front of the bridge. A communications officer and a weapons officer sits behind. Nemo: A three man crew? Brenda: Those are the three main functions of a fighter. Each station is opperated independently of each other. However, in the case something happens to one or more members of the crew during a battle, the surviving members, or member of the crew will simply be able to touch a button and transfer controll of the craft to themselves. The Weapons officer can become the pilot and communications officer. Nemo: That means we have to train a three man crew that can work as one during the heat of a battle. Brenda: Yes. Nemo: That's not going to be easy. It's going to take a lot of flight time. Brenda: It was the best solution to the problem of mass and personel needs. Nemo: We'll need more target bouys for practice. What about weapons? Brenda: Full array of phasers, but we replaced the photon torpedos with smaller, quicker missels. Also, the smaller missels take up less space so you can load more in the weapons bay. Nemo sat looking at the plans on the PADD Brenda had given him. He sat back and smiled Nemo: How soon can we re-start this project? Brenda: WE have everything we need. Nemo: Get your team together 08:00 in the morning and get started. Also, I want a holodeck simulation ready to start training crews as soon as possible. Brenda: Yes, Sir. Nemo strolled down the corridor towards conference room 5, where Kanani and Nohemi were working. Nemo walked in on the two women looking at data from probes that had been sent ahead the previous day. Nemo: Found anything interesting? Kanani: Captain. No, we really haven't. Nemo: Is it a system we should skip? Kanani: I wouldn't say that yet, give a few more hours to look over the data before we make a decision. Nemo: Okay. I do have a request. Kanani: Sure. Nemo: We are going to have to make a lot more practice bouys to train the pilots on the new fighters. So, I need you to scan for metal deposits, preferably in stray astroids or uninhabital moons. Something easy to get to, and easy to work with. Kanani: I'll see what I can find you. Nemo: Great. Nohemi, how is she treating you? Herrera: Everything is going just fine, Captain. Nemo: Good, carry on.

Meanwhile... Shell: No Lt., I said code 249902 not 249209. What are trying to do, make it too easy? Roc: My mistake Commander. Shell: That is right. Well, what are you waiting for? Reeeeeprogram the phase! Roc: I don't suppose Commander that you could be a little more patient? Shell: Excuse me Lt.? What did you say? Roc: Nothing. Nemo walks in... Nemo: Shell, report Shell: We have completed phases 1 and 2 of simulation m3 as your requested. Man to man combat simulations are almost complete and ship to ship simulations are well under way...that is if Lt. Roc here can complete the final phase of simulation 3. Roc looks visibly angry Nemo: Excellent. The simulations look great and actually, you both are ahead of schedule. Shell: I know Captain, but I know that the earlier the better. Once we get these simulations completed, we can move on to beginning combat training. Nemo: Very good Commander.... and Commander, the weapon choice for your simulations are quite unique. You have a mixture of protocol weapons and ones that I would never consider using in those circumstances. Who's idea was it? Shell: The weapons were Lt. Roc's idea sir. Nemo: Impeccable job Lt. Roc: Thank you Captain. Nemo: And Commander, I can tell you designed phase 2. It has Shell written all over it. Excellent job Commander. Shell: Thank you Captain. Shell with an obvious proud smile on her face. Nemo: I will leave you to the rest of your work. Carry on. Nemo leaves Shell: The Captain was right, your choice of weapons are quite impressive. You have taken account of the combator's abilities as well. Interesting. Roc: Is that a compliment Commander? Shell: I suppose so. Shell and Roc continue working...

Nemo, Shell, Choy, Herrera, Ingersol, Brenda and Greyfoot sat in the conference room discussing the plans for the fighter training. BRENDA: The simulator is up and running Captain, all variables have been programed in. And as we are building them, if we see any changes that will have to be made, we'll adjust the program. SHELL: Won't that mean re-training after the fact. NEMO: A risk we'll have to take, besides, you're all Starfleet certified pilots, you understand the necessity of being flexable with technology. SHELL: Yes, sir. CHOY: How many crews are we going to train? NEMO: We should have twelve fighters when finished. I want two three man crews for each fighter and four back up crews. HERRERA: That's 84 crewmen, Captain. NEMO: You shouldn't have any problem finding volunteers. CHOY: Volunteers no, qualified pilots, possibly. NEMO: Train them and get them certified. SHELL: Train and certify new pilots? That's going to take a lot of time. NEMO: Delegate. Have some of the certified shuttle pilots train new people. Spend your time getting to know the new fighter and preparing to train the crews. CHOY: We can handle the challenge. NEMO: I had no doubt. The time table on the fighters is three weeks for the first one to be complete, then about every four days a new one will be ready. I want the first three crews ready for hands on, in fighter training in four weeks. So, everyone has their hands full. Any questions? SHELL: Are you expecting us to face some serious fire power when we get to the Delta Quadrant? NEMO: We know the Borg's home is there, we also know the Heradra live there. However, it is doubtful that we will run into them this close to the boarders of the Alpha and Delta quadrants, since Voyager faced them deeper in this area. But I do expect to find species that are not all that excited to meet new people. So yes, I expect to face some serious fire power. Any other questions? everyone looked around then back at Nemo Very well, dismissed. The members of the command staff present all stood to leave, and began to make their way to the door NEMO: Shell, Nohemi, Kanani, I would like a word with the three of you. The remaining crew departed, while the three young ladies stayed behind.

Shell, Choy, and Herrera stood before Nemo in the conference room, the others who had participate in the previous briefing had departed. NEMO: I want the three of you to get as much flight time in with my personal ships. SHELL: Excuse me sir? NEMO: I want the three of you to practice flying my personal shuttles. SHELL: May I ask why? NEMO: Once the crews are trained in the simulators, they are going to need in flight, fighting practice. Simulator will only help so much. I need them used to fighting ailen fighters. My shuttles provide a adequate foe. SHELL: With all due respect, sir, those scout ships and shuttle don't pose any type of threat at all. NEMO: You've only flow one, once, commander. And that was undercloak, with the mission of secretly placing mines on the bellies of Romulan Warbirds. You have no idea how they have truly been modified and armed. KANANI: Adam, what exactly do you want us to do? NEMO: In ancient US history, fighter pilots were trained in the art of "Dog Fighting" or Mid-Air combat. Young fighter pilots were placed in the most up-to-date fighter jets and with computer aided targeting, faced off against instructors in different types of fighters to help hone their skills. That's what I want you three to do. Get familiar with my scout ships, they'll prove themselves more than capable fighters. Then I want the three of you to face off against the fighter crews and teach them how to fight in open space. NOHEMI: That's quite a load of responsibility, Captain. NEMO: You can handle it, I have faith in the three of you. SHELL: But shouldn't we be training to fly the fighters? NEMO: No. You train a fight crew. You are command officers, if we do have to face hostiles, you will be on the bridge with me, not out in those fighters. SHELL: But sir... NEMO: No buts, Commander. The three of you are my top three officers in line of command, if something happens to me on the bridge, and the three of you are out in fighters, who takes command? One of you by remote out in the middle of a dog fight? No. I will be depending upon your expertiese, and experience in the time of battle. Looking at Shell who is about to say something This isn't a debate, Commander, it's an order. Any further questions? KANANI: Not much spare time left in our schedules, Captain, NEMO: I know, I'm sorry. However, we have a mission, and after what we've been through, I want to be as prepared as possible. KANANI: Understood. NEMO: Okay, dismissed. The three young ladies exited the conference room and headed for the bridge. NOHEMI: Commander Choy. Kanani turned around to answer Nohemi KANANI: Yes, Commander. NOHEMI: I was wondering if I would have a word with you, looking at Shell In private? SHELL: You don't have to excuse your self from me, I have better places to be. Shell walks over to the command chair and sits down. KANANI: Let's take a walk, commander. Nohemi and Kanani walk to the turbo lift and enter

KANANI: What can I help you with Commander? NOHEMI: How long have you known the Captain? KANANI: Hard to say. He knew my parents in the academy, so he’s known me from the time I was born. I remember him always being there. I mean, as much as a Starfleet officer can be in any persons life. Why do you ask? NOHEMI: I met him while serving with him in his first command on the DESTINY. It was close to the end of his time there. Jane came aboard around the same time. I was his helm’s man. KANANI: You didn’t know Karen. NOHEMI: No, he was already widowed when I graduated from the academy. When he was transferred to the HORNET he took Jane, me, and a few others with him. He was always protective of Jane and I. He would send us on missions that would help us learn and gain experience but placed us in very little danger. When it became apparent that we needed to be on our own and gain the opportunity for promotion, he had us transferred off to other ships. KANANI: But he’s always kept in contact and had some sort of input into your career. NOHEMI: Yes. KANANI: I know. He did the same for me. NOHEMI: I was excited when he requested me to be his second officer on this ship. KANANI: Are you upset with me because Adam re-instated my commission? NOHEMI: No! Not at all. I consider it a privilege to be able to study under someone else who knows Adam better than I do. That’s not what I wanted to talk to you about. KANANI: You like him. NOHEMI: How??? KANANI: I can see it in your eyes. I can hear it in your voice. Don’t worry, I’m not going to run off and tell him. NOHEMI: I just don’t know what to do about it? I mean, I’m not sure what protocol is. KANANI: There is not any protocol written on the subject. Captains get married and date crewmen all the time. What I can tell you is this, you need to find out how Adam feels. Not how he’s going to react. I’ll tell you how he’ll react. NOHEMI: What do you mean? KANANI: If you were to approach him and ask him out on a date, he’ll turn you down. Not because he doesn’t like you, but because he sees himself as something as a father figure to you and me. He would tell you to find a younger, handsomer man and settle down with him. He would tell you he’s too old for you and you deserve someone who can give you a better life. NOHEMI: It sounds like you’ve had this discussion with him before. KANANI: Not exactly, but close. Nohemi, Adam and I are friends, closer than friends. It’s hard to put into words. We’re not romantically involved, but we’re closer than family even, but not at the point that we would ever plan a wedding. Am I being clear? NOHEMI: Somewhat. Do you think I should drop the idea? KANANI: No, as a matter of fact, you need to find out how he feels. If you don’t, you’ll either continue to wonder, and that will eat away at you and you’ll miss opportunities not only for other relationships, but opportunities for career advancement. Or, you’ll begin to resent him, and you’ll lose your respect for not only the man but also the Captain he is. NOHEMI: And just exactly am I supposed to find out how he feels? KANANI: Good question. Perhaps, without playing matchmaker, I might be able to help you with that. NOHEMI: Really? KANANI: Yes, but once I find out, it’s up to you to decide what you want to do with the information. But remember this, in the grand scheme of things, how we feel about other people, or how they feel about us, really doesn’t matter. We are part of a command structure. You are three people from being in command of this starship, where split second decisions can mean life or death for one person, or an entire culture. While we may have been able to wipe out hunger and suffering back home, we will be exploring places where poverty is rampant. Who we might go out with one night, really won’t matter in those situations. NOHEMI: True. KANANI: I’m not trying to dampen your spirits, just trying to put them in perspective. NOHEMI: Understood, Commander. KANANI: Good. Now, I need to make a dinner appointment with our Captain to see if I can’t prod him along in his social life.

The Academy. This reminded her of her days at the Academy. Sitting, listening to lectures. The difference now was, she was in a holodeck, programed to be a lecture hall, and the chief engineer and communications officers were holding the breifing, or lesson, or whatever you wanted to call it. The new fighters would be interesting to fly. Fortunatly, for herself, her pilots certification allowed her to take the earliest classes, then she would be assigned a class of her own to train and certify as pilots of regular shuttles, then those pilots would be trained in the fighters. Lt. Green sat listening, absorbing every word spoken. She didn't want to miss any vital information given either by Lt. Brenda or Lt. Grayfoot. She was scheduled for simulator instruction three hours after class, which meant she would have little time to study before her next class. Just like being back at the Academy. MARKOV: Lt. Caron turned around to see Markov standing behind her as she headed out of the holodeck. The lecture now over, she wanted to get some study time in before her next class. GREEN: Lt. MARKOV: When doesss yourrrr shuttle trrrraining ssstarrt? GREEN: In three hours. MARKOV: Arrre you ssheaded off to strrudy? GREEN: Study and eat. MARKOV: Would yourr likess umma perrsonal tutorrr to help you? GREEN: Normally, I like to study alone, for concentration purposes, but in this case I think making an exception would be a wise choice. MARKOV: Ten forrrward? GREEN: Agreeded.

She was upset. No. Upset wasn't nearly a strong enough word. Angry, furious, she wasn't sure what word would properly describe her mood. Of course, she wasn't worried about words right now. She didn't care about words right now. All she wanted to do was hit something, anything. But she didn't have time. She didn't have time for anything, and this assignment was another waste of her time. How did he know? How in the name of the seven gods of Trill did he find out? And what business of his was it? Not only was she not allowed to pilot the fighters, she was being required to waste her time as an enemy pilot to train the fighters. AND, now she was being pulled from that training to accelerate her training with Turnel. Her training session with Turnel was scheduled to begin in fifteen minutes. Just enough time, time to get off a letter of protest to Starfleet command, letting them know that her vast talents were being wasted by the incompentant moron they had assigned as Captain.

Nemo sat in the conference room with Kanani, Turnel, Brenda, Nohemi, and Roc. A scematic of the nearest solar system was hovering above them in three-D above the conference table. NEMO: This is the system we want to go to? CHOY: Yes, Captain. The Federation sent a series of probes to this area about seventy years ago. The initial reports there is one planet that supports life, a pre-industrial civilization. Our current probes confirm that finding, the planet doesn't show much advancement in the civilization there. Mostly rural farms and community, a few small towns, one or two medium sized cities with buildings no more that four stories. NEMO: No possibility of being detected? CHOY: I'm certain they have scientst and I'm sure one of them has built a telescope. Fortunately, they are on the other side of the system from where we want to be. NEMO: Explain. CHOY: This system consist of eleven planets, a hundred and thirteen moons, an undetermined number of comets, and four astroid belts. The thing of great interest to us, is the third astroid belt between the tenth and eleventh planet. NEMO: What's so interesting? CHOY: To Naomi Commander, would you do the honors? HERRERA: This astroid belt is loaded with natural minerals, and metals, in very large and easily accessable deposits. NEMO: What kind of minerals and metals? HERRERA: Nickle, Iron, Copper, Silver, Gold, Platnium, Lead, Emerald, Sapphire, Sulpher, Carbon, Diamond, Dilipthiam, Uranium... I could go on. NEMO: Did you check your readings twice? CHOY: Four times, each of us, Noami, Myself, Rock, and even Brenda. Captain, in just a four cubed kilometer area there are enough materials for us to build two Galaxy class starships. NOAMI: And Captain, the dilipthiam is the most stable deposit I've ever seen. BRENDA: If we can really get at it, we could probably supply ourselves with enough dilipthiam to keep us running for twenty or thirty years. NEMO: What about anti-matter. BRENDA: That we would have to find else where. NEMO: How long are you thinking we will need to stay? CHOY: About a week. Plus, two of the fighters should be ready by the time we arrive, we could get some training fighting in an astroid belt. NEMO: thinking carefully about the proposal Okay, get a shopping list ready. CHOY: Already have. She slides a PADD across to Nemo, and he picks it up. NEMO: In the name of... What do you want with all of this, and just where are we going to store it? HERRERA: Storage won't be a problem. Sixty percent of it will be used in the next two months. The rest, well we have some ideas. NEMO: Would you care to let me in on them? CHOY: Captain, we're not sure what we're going to run into out here, we thought if we had some natural minerals, precious stones, we might be able to use them as barter for supplies we might need later on. NEMO: I see. Well, it seems you have this all figured out. CHOY: Pretty much. NEMO: Nemo smiled across the table at Kanani. The just what exactly am I doing here? CHOY: Keeping us all sane. NEMO: Good, glad I have a purpose. Okay, get us there and get started with the mineing process. Dismissed. Every one stood and moved to the door. Kanani stayed behind. NEMO: Noticing Kanani wasn't leaving. Is there something I can do for you, Commander? KANANI: I wanted to know if I could have a word with you? NEMO: Of course.

Shell stormed down the hall. What did he know? What did that pointed eared, green blooded, idiot, Romulan know? Pride? Sure, she had pride. Pride in her accomplishments, pride in her heritage, pride in her abilities, but an issue with pride? She would show him. Shell slammed her fist in a nearby bulkhead and stormed off. The dent could be repaired later. Nemo sat in a secluded booth in Ten Forward. He glanced around to see several members of his crew relaxing. Or at least most of them relaxing. Markov and Green were furiously studying their flight manuels. Their first simulation would be in an hour. The door opened and Kanani strolled in. She spotted Nemo at his table and crossed Ten Forward to join him. KANANI: I'm glad you agreeded to join me. ADAM: I wasn't aware I had a choice. A waitress came to their table. WAITRESS: Can I take your order? KANANI: Yes, Tammy, I want a Hawaiian salad with fresh fish and mango juice. The Captain wants a T-Bone, medium well, with steak sauce on the side, and baked potato with sour cream, butter, and bacon bits. And a tall glass of iced tea, sweatened. WAITRESS: It will be right out. ADAM: Okay, whats up? KANANI: What do you mean? ADAM: You rarely ever order for me, and you've never ordered for me when I've been your commanding officer, so something is up. KANANI: I discovered one of the couples you were talking about. Markov and Green. ADAM: That was an easy one, If you hadn't of figured that one out I would have decommissioned you and returned you to Hostess duties. KANANI: Kill joy. ADAM: Spill it. KANANI: I want to ask you a few questions, of a personal nature. ADAM: Why? KANANI: They relate to one of our earlier conversations. For example, if you were to take my advice and ask someone on this ship out for a date, who is the first female to come to mind? ADAM: You have to add the disclaimer "female"? KANANI: Just indulge me. Who first comes to mind? ADAM: I have no idea. KANANI: Then you can't leave the table till you come up with a name, and don't try to make one up, I've memorized the entire crew roster. ADAM: You're a tough one when you get your mind made up. KANANI: That's why you added me as your second officer. Tammy brought their food over and they ate for several minutes before anyone spoke again. ADAM: If I had to name someone, I would probably say, Troi, she's close to my age. KANANI: Why does it have to be someone close to your age? Do you think you don't have anything in common with someone older or younger? ADAM: You just said I had to give you a name, you didn't say I had to justify my reasoning. KANANI: Well, you do. Dinner is on me and we are playing by my rules. Why Troi? ADAM: I don't really know, it was just a name. I seriously doubt I would have thought about her if you hadn't put the pressure on me. KANANI: Pressure? A Starship Captain who not more than a month ago faced down a fleet of Romulan war birds with three starships and three cloaked shuttles thinks this is pressure? ADAM: Laugh if you will, but you don't know the pressure it causes for a man to ask a woman out. KANANI: Perhaps I do, perhaps I don't, but stop wimping out on me. Think. Adam took a bite of his baked potato and stared off into the starfield. If only Karen were still alive. But if she were, would he be here? Maybe on this ship, yes, but having this conversation with Kanani, absolutly not. And why was he having this conversation? Silly. Just sillyness. To think of him dating again. He had two daughters, which reminded him, he needed to write them both and check up on them at the academy. True a man in his mid forties wasn't dead, but still... He had just lost someone very close to him, and had almost lost one of his daughters. That was more loss than he really wanted to endure at any time. And while Jane wasn't his daughter, or his ... That's was an even more silly thought, but he was as close to Jane as he was to Kanani, or Nohemi, or his daughters, or even Karen. No, dating was out of the question. Just simply out of the question. ADAM: Honestly, Kanani, I can't think of anyone I would want to go out with. KANANI: Okay, then let me throw out some names. Troi. ADAM: No, inappropriate for the ships captain and counselor to date. KANANI: Her sister is married to a ships captain. And they handle it quite well. Besides, I'm not talking about her as a counselor, but as a woman, do you find her attractive? ADAM: Attractive, yes, if she wasn't the ships counselor, I don't know, probably not. KANANI: Brenda. ADAM: Don't think so. Never gave it much thought, but probably not. KANANI: Would you have asked Jane out. And before you answer, don't think of her as your daughter or being younger than you. As a woman, would you have asked her out? ADAM: That's different, that's like asking if I would ask you out? KANANI: Would you? If we didn't have the relationship we have, would you have ever asked me out? ADAM: Where is this coming from? KANANI: Adam, you need to confront what is holding you back from becoming involved with someone again. No I don't want you to ask me out, but I do want you to think about the people around you, the people who have relied upon you, and how your emotional well being is affected by your relationships. ADAM: What makes you think Jane would have wanted to go out with an older fart like me? I was almost like a father to her. KANANI: You were a father to her, but she would have said yes in a heart beat if you had shown any type of romantic interest in her. Adam sat stunned as he stared at Kanani. ADAM: How do you know that? KANANI: I'm a woman, we know these things. Just like I know that if you had shown any type of romantic interest in me several years ago I wouldn't have turned you down. Again, Adam sat stunned. KANANI: Don't worry, Adam, I'm no longer interested in you that way, though if you were to ask me out, I would say yes, just as would have the women on this ship. ADAM: I had no idea... KANANI: I know, and I didn't tell you for a reason. I didn't want to jeopardize our relationship. Part of me is glad I didn't, but there is a part of me, just a small part, that wishes I had taken the initiative and asked you out. A part of me wonders to this day, what it would have been like. Adam, sat stunned, he reached for his tea but stopped short. KANANI: Adam, there is someone on this ship, who has very strong feelings for you. Personally, I think the two of you would make a great couple, but you're going to have to decide if you want to find that happiness again. No one, I mean no one can make that decision for you, but if you decide not to persue any type of relationship, you may miss the opportunity of a life time.

Markov, Green and seven other crew members stood outside of holodeck two. All anxious for their first simulation in the fighters. Inside, Commander Shell was programing the last of the details. Shell stood in the control booth she would use as her eyes and ears for the simulation. Outside a simulation of a flight deck with three of the underconstruction fighters sitting on deck. Shell punched in a few more commands, then opened the doors. Nine crew members walked into the holodeck. Shell walked out of the control booth and met them halfway between the door and the fighters. SHELL: This is the first of six scheduled holodeck simulations ordered by the Captain to prepare you for piloting the new fighters. Your individual PADDS have been sent your rides and assignments. Check them and take your positions. Shell walked back to her room and the officers checked their PADDS. Each walked to their assigned fighter, boarded and sat at their posts. Green caught a quick glance of Markov as they boarded separate fighters. SHELL: All pilots begin start up procedures. Each pilot, navigator, and weapons officer began checking in with Shell going down their check list as they had been taught. Nohemi sat in the command chair on othe bridge, the afternoon shift busily going over data they were receieving. Nohemi kept a careful eye on the data as it poured in. NOHEMI: Helm, how far away are we from the system? HELM: Four hundred lightyears. Estimated TOA at warp five is six hours. NOHEMI: Advise at two lightyears and come to a complete stop. Nohemi touch her comm badge. Commander Herrera to Captain Nemo, please come to the bridge. The three fighters soared in formation throught various articles of space debris, vaporizing some with phasers, dodging other pieces and just generally flying at a leasurley pace. Markov was the first to pick up the signal sitting at the navigation station of fighter two. MARKOV: Boooggggrri at thrrre o'clock high, sixteen thousand kilometers. THOMPSON: Fighter one has it. CLARK: Fighter three has it. THOMPSON: Form up and stay tight, moving to intercept. The three fighters gracefully moved out of the debris field and headed for the lone boggie.

NOHEMI: I don't know Captain, something just looks wrong. NEMO: Don't worry about it, just try to show me. NOHEMI: In an average asteroid belt their is no pattern to the distribution, size, or speed of the asteroids. There's little ambient radiation and only small amounts of matter that regesters as something other than rock or mineral. NEMO: I don't see a pattern to the asteroids. NOHEMI: Neither did I at first, but as I continued to study the readings, Something started to look familiar. NEMO: Familiar? How? NOHEMI: Remember my brother, Gabrial? NEMO: The tall lanky one? NOHEMI: Yes, remember how he was always into ancient earth video games? NEMO: Yes, I remember being invited to your parents for a new years eve party. He had his own game room with so many of those games you could hardly walk around it. NOHEMI: Yes, one of those games was called Astroid. It was run by computer and the average person always thought that the astroids came at them in a random pattern. NEMO: They didn't. NOHEMI: No, I was able to detect the pattern quite quickly. That's why I have all the top scores on his game. She smiled sheelishly. NEMO: You recognized a pattern here? NOHEMI: Yes, it's more complicated and less obvious than the video game, but still, if you look close enough, you can see it. THOMPSON: Callie, Callie, pull up. Thompson was screaming into his comm. Their fighter, disabled and floating dead in space, he could only watch. Fighter two had been vaporized less than five seconds after they reached their target and discovered not one bogie, but six. That was four minuts earlier. They had been disabled a minute after Two was gone. Now Callie, in fighter three, was trying to dodge the six bogies and still try to beam her crew onto her fighter. THOMPSON: Callie, run, you can't help. CALLIE: No one left behind. THOMPSON: Leave. Three shots crossed paths just infront of fighter three. They were unable to evade the shots. Sparks flew and then disolved. Ten crew members of the USS DEBIT CARD stood on the yellow girided holodeck. SHELL: You're dead. GREEN: Commander, you couldn't have expected us to go up against six ships. SHELL: You shouldn't have expected anything less. I'm here to train you, not baby sit you. The Captain wants you trained to defend the ship. That means you need to be able to defeat anything that comes after you, even if you are the last fighter left. Think of this as a game, it's you against me. And I never lose. Debriefing at Oh seven hundred tomorrow morning. NEMO: Captain to commander Shell. SHELL: Shell here, sir. NEMO: Report to my ready room when your simulation is over. SHELL: Simulation is over, I'll be right there.

NEMO: Looks like nothing. SHELL: Then we should approach it like nothing. NEMO: Negative, Nohemi suspects something fishy, we'll approach it like something is fishy. SHELL: There are no signs of water anywhere in the belt, so how could things be fishy if there are no fish? Adam stared at Shell, while Kanani stiffled a laugh and Nohemi turned her head. CHOY: Lelandra, it's a figure of speach. Fishy means something seems wrong. SHELL: Looking at Nemo Why didn't you just say so? NEMO: Going on as if nothing just happened. I'm going to send you three in cloaked to investigate. SHELL: Wait a minute. You're going to have us waste our time flying around this place just because those rocks resemble some ancient video game? NEMO: We are not going to waste time. We are going to investigate the hunch of one of my senior officers, just the same as I would investigate a hunch you or Commander Choy would have. Now, you'll fly my personal shuttles, under cloak, communication blackout, using passive scans only. CHOY: How much of this belt are we supposed to scout? Lt LI: Bridge to Captain. NEMO: Nemo here. Lt LI: We are approaching two light years from the system. NEMO: Drop out of warp, come to a full stop and hold at station keeping. Nemo out. You'll warp into the system undercloak, stay cloaked, split the nearest section of the belt into thirds and each of you will take a third. CHOY: How long are we supposed to search? NEMO: I expect you to be out for about twelve hours. Don't do anything foolish, just look for anything that is out of the ordinary. We'll keep track of you by transponder. Remember no communication while you are out. CHOY: What if we run into an emergency? NEMO: If, and I mean if, there is an extream emergency, turn your transponder off for two seconds, turn it back on for three, then off for two, then back on. If I see that, I'll come in for you. Brenda is preping my ships now, you'll be ready in an hour.

Wasting time. That's what they were doing, wasting time. How could that ancient old goat think that his little protege could possibly know anything about an astroid belt based on some stupid ancient human video game. By the gods she swore if she got out of here she was going to take a shuttle and fly back to Starfleet headquarters and shoot the Admiral who assigned her to this duty. Three hours, for three hours she has been floating around this belt at impulse taking passive readings on every little rock that floated by. "There is was again" Kanani stared at her board. The blip returned again. This was the thirteenth astroid at least two kilometers in length that had registered a blip on her passive sensors. She wondered if Nohemi or Lelandra had seen it. She knew she couldn't scan it actively, but she could get closer... Again with the stupid beeping. What was that, the twentieth time? She was getting a head ache. She kept recording each beep. After her fifth hour she actually started to pay attention to her readings. It couldn't be. No, that little upstart didn't. Had she actually been able to detect this? There it was, she saw it. Just barely hugging the port side of the asteriod. I resembled a thruster, but it was a little more complex in design than one. Perhaps. She looked around, trying to find a small enough rock. If she could manuver the ship just right she should be able to bounce the rock to where it would dislodge the object. The she could bump it back to the Debit Card. There they could study what it was. Maybe that would shut up Commander I'm better than everyone else.

Nemo, Brenda, Shell, Choy, and Herrera stood in the cargo bay with the shuttles and the alien artifact. Brenda had run scans and tests to make sure it was safe to have in the ship. BRENDA: I can only estimate but It would appear to be between two and five thousand years old. SHELL: Who cares how old it is, what is it? BRENDA: It appears to be some kind of computer controlled guidance thruster. CHOY: You were right, Nohemi. NEMO: It would appear so. Did you find anything other than this? CHOY: Just signs of astroids being broken down, but I don't know if it was from previous mining, or natural collisions. NOHEMI: Perhaps if we scanned the rest of the belt we might find signs of a mining opperation. NEMO: Perhaps, but that would take a long time, and I want to mine and get out as quickly as possible. CHOY: Even so, Captain, we're going to be here for at least two weeks, Nemo sighed. She was right and he couldn't argue. NEMO: Once we establish a base of opperations I might consider someone exploring the belt, but we must remember that there is one inhabitited pre-industrial civilization in the system and I don't want them finding us. And if this is left over from another race who mined this belt previously, I'm not sure I want to run into them. I'll take it under advisement. Nohemi, that was a very clever maneuver you pulled to get this thing loose and push it here. It was also very dangerous and foolish, you could have been discovered when the astroid came in contact with the ship under cloak. NAHOMI: Yes sir. NEMO: Good work. Brenda have a team study this. Okay everyone, back to work. Nemo to bridge. Lt LI: Bridge here. NEMO: Move to the astroid belt and set up a place to start to work.
