Nemo made his way to the quarters where Ambassador Turnel was staying. Upon entering, he found his friend sitting quietly reading.

Nemo: What are you reading?

Turnel: The collective works of C. S. Lewis.

Nemo: Ancient Earth.

Turnel: Yes, I find his writings for children fascinating, and even his misguided thoughts on religion are intriguing.

Nemo: (Sitting across the table from Turnel) How so?

Turnel: To go from a man who knows there is no God to a man who believes that there is one, and then writes several books concerning this faith is almost unbelievable.

Nemo: What about the children's books that you find fascinating?

Turnel: What about them?

Nemo: They have "Religious" overtones to them.

Turnel: REally? I must read them again to discover this theme.

Nemo: There is another book you should read before you read them again, it will help you understand his writings much better.

Turnel: And what book is that?

Nemo: I'll get you a copy. (Nemo stands) We found two cloaked Romulans on board. they are in the brig. I was about to go and question them.

Turnel: They will not tell you anything.

Nemo: I know, but you are welcome to join me to make sure they do not tell me anything. Besides, you get to witness my humane treatment of our guests.

Turnel: I do not doubt your humane treatment of prisoners.

Nemo: No, but your government might not agree. If you are there, you can assure that them that my treatment of their men was proper.

Turnel: If it were proper, you would drug them torture them then kill them for not telling you what you want to know. But that is not the Federations definition of proper. Yes, my friend, I will go with you to witness your interogation of Romulan prisioners. What may I ask have you done with their weapons and personel cloaking devises?

Nemo: What would you do with them?

In Engineering the testing of the personal cloaking devices had been completed. Once the flaw had been revealed, understanding the basic principals of how it worked had been easy for Shell and Lt. Brenda to figure out. Adjusting the internal sensors of the DEBIT CARD to detect them was also an easy chore. Once the report had been made to the Captain he gave his next set of orders.

Nemo: Lt. Roc. I want you to take four secuity teams and secure the bridge and deck one of the BEACON. Once you have secured them, configure the internal sensors to deteck any other Romulans, cloaked or not cloaked, on board the BEACON and detain them.

Shell: Captain, I should be heading up this mission.

Nemo: Not yet, Commander. Not until I find out what happened to the crew of the BEACON. I want you to meet me outside the brig in twenty minutes. Bridge, have you heard from Lt. Grayfoot?

Communications officer: Not yet, sir, they are still trying to establish a syncranous orbit with the planet.

Nemo: Let me know when they think they have found something. Nemo out.

Sitting in a not very comfortable chair, Markav continued to scan his set of communcation equipment that he had quickly installed into the Runabout. As the pilot brought their ship to a high orbit between the USS Debit Card and Beacon and the nearest star.

Turning to the science officer, Markav says: Rrrrggghhh... Anything new concerning those electromagnetic burts that we need for seeing those "shadow?"

Science officer looks at various readouts: Nothing naturally in the near future. Earliest possible one of suitable intensity will not be here...

Markav: Arrrggghh... Spare me, please?

Turning his attention back to his console, Markav continued to make the necessary modifications to the proton torpedo that they had attached to their ship. Talking over his shoulder to the science officer: Make sure you get the necessary calculations correct. We only have one shot at this.

Science officer: I know... I know.... Enters some information into her computer console.. Okay... I have the calculations set it, that will give the right kind of radiation... But there's only one problem

Markav rolls his eyes and growls to himself. Then aloud: What?

Science officer: To produce the kind of results we need, the effective range will only be 650 kilometers. After that, the radiation will be to weak to create the right effect...

Markav quickly gets up and turns around, putting his paw on the female science officer's shoulder, he sees for himself that her calculations are pretty accurate.

Science officer, twisting her shoulder from under Markav's hand/paw: Do... you... mind?! I really don't like having your hairy hands... Paws.. or what ever they are on my shoulder while I'm trying to work!

Turning back to his console, he keys in the code for the transmission to the USS Debit Card. Markav to Debit Card... He hears only static... Markav to USS Debit Card, come in... Again, only static...

Female science officer: I told you, our communcators would not function past 2 kilometers from the Debit Card... This unusual interference...

Rolling his eyes again, Markav says: Then why don't you figure out a way to punch through it!

Markav hears her spin around in her chair, the slight breeze as she moves up behind him, and: Look here, you flea-bitten feline! I did not ask..

Markav: First of all, I am not flea bitten... Hears her groan and guesses that she's now rolling her eyes and staring at the ceiling of the runabout, or something like that.... I am also not a feline, but a felonian... Turns around and, while staring into her bright, green eyes: There is a big difference. And for effect, he gives her a semi-toothy grin.

The science officer just closes her eyes, sighes, and then returns to her seat, muttering something like,
How can something so cute as a cat get such an attitude?

Pilot: If you two are finished fighting like cats and dogs... The science officer groans and Markav gives him a low snarl, both of which he ignores... You might be interested in knowing that there is some sort of electromatic flux moving near us.

Glancing at her console, the science officer says: I see it. 75.872 kilometers, moving 45` less than parallel to us.

Markav: And that means....?

Science officer: Well, Mr. Smarty-Paws, it will intercept us in less than three minutes!

Markav: Pilot, evasive menuvers!

Pilot: You don't have to tell me twice, Sir!

Everyone grabs a chair or something else as the roundabout starts to suddenly shift from one direction, to another, and then to another.

Science officer: It appears to be changing course to come between us and the Debit Card.

Once again, Markav tries to contact the Debit Card, but gets only static.

Science officer: Well, mouse breath, you could try sending a low frequency laser light bursts.. That shouldn't be affected by the static..

Markav turns to glare at her back for several seconds.. Turning back to his panel, Markav quickly sends a laser light burst message aimed at the Debit Card's bridge, saying:

We are encountering strange eltromatic disruption of communcations. Unable to detrermine type or orgin of source. Preparing to fire modified torp for desired shadow effect. Hang tight.

Markav: Okay, Red.. Making a direct reference to the science officers bright, red hair... Fire torp in 20 seconds. Pilot, as soon as it's launched, move us the heck away from it!

Pilot: Aye! Aye!

Before Nemo makes his way to the Brig to speak to the Romulan, Shell gets there first...

She is standing outside the Brig, eyes piercing, her pupils glowing with a strange shade of blue. Her voice is a bit deeper, a bit more forceful... She commands the security officer to open the Brig and she walks in, the forcefield closing behind her. With a quick movement, she grabs the Romulan by the neck and throws him against the back wall. Quite a feat of strength, even for Commander Shell.

Shell: WHAT are you doing here?

Romulan: Who are you? How did you know about our cloaking devices?

Shell lifts the Romulan off the floor by about half a foot as she pushes him against the wall, her hand closing tightly around his neck. He struggles to breath.

Shell: I'm the one asking the questions. Why did you sneak onto the Beacon? What did you do with the crew?

Romulan: You're...trying...to...annihilate...us.

Shell's eyes glaze over with anger and her hand tightens around his neck.

Shell: LIAR! What were you doing on the Beacon? Why were your people cloaked?

Romulan: I didn't sneak onto your ship. We were taken there by force.

Shell (sarcastically): Right... Taken by force while cloaked. I'm gonna buy that one.

Romulan: NO. The cloaking devices were given to us later... so we could escape... Your Captain Carroll is... an animal...

Shell's eyes blaze over with disgust and she lets go of the Romulan, watching him crumple to the ground.

Shell: Without proof, there's no way I'm believing your lies, Romulan.

She motions for the security officer to release the force field and steps out of the Brig, the force field closing shut behind her. She turns to the officer and speaks sternly.

Shell: You know that NO ONE is to know that I am here, not even the Captain?

Officer: Yes Ma'am...

Shell quickly exits the room, careful not to run into Nemo on her way out.

As Shell hastily walks down the corridor she feels a presence and begins to glance quickly around. Not one to be easily startled, she is more curious than afraid

She peers into a darkened doorway that leads to an equipment room. The door is security sealed, but still she is drawn to the door.

As Shell steps closer to the door, a figure steps forward as if he emerged directly from the door itself.

Shell is slightly surprised but her resolute attitude kept her poised. She immediately recognized the figure as K.

Figure: Hello Shell, its been a while.

Shell: K? Why are you here? Has there been more trouble on Floren Prime or are you just in the neighborhood?

K: Always the trusting one aren't you Shell? When have I ever steered you wrong?

Shell: Well, there was the time at ...

Before she could finish, K just shook his head and interrupted

K: A slight error in judgment on my part, that is all. Everything worked out then. But that is no matter, I have something to tell you. But I do not think it best to discuss it here, come with me.

Shell followed K into the equipment room as the door had only been a projection K had created to keep the curious away

K: I need to tell you something and you have to understand why we are doing this.

Shell: We? So the K continuum is behind this?

K: Don't be hasty, there are reasons for these things. Reasons we are...

Shell interrupting
Shell: ... not permitted to reveal. Right. Again the arrogance.

There was a moment of disquiet where K just looked at the wall, pensive about the situation, but obviously under some stress.

Finally K just blurted out, as if he had been holding his breath.

K: We facilitated the acquisition of personal cloaking devices for the Romulans. They are needed to protect them from ... what is about to happen.

Sighing heavily, K continues

K: I wish I could say more Shell, I really do. But you must understand, we are only helping the Romulans at this time because it will serve the Federation's purposes in the bigger game.

Shell: (mockingly) Bigger game? You think this is a game?

K stood resolute and his face was partially hidden in shadow

K: In a manner of speaking, yes it is. So if you would like to know how to detect the personal cloaks, just ask. But if you would rather insult me, I can leave.

Shell's eyes widened. She was unsure to trust K in this but she knew that if K said he knew how to detect the cloaks, he was definitely telling the truth

Shell: Alright, I'm game then. Tell me K, how do we detect the personal cloaks?

K: It's actually quite clever. So clever I wish I had thought of it, but I digress. All you need is a specially polarized lens. As the light bends around the cloaked object, it has to speed up. The cloaks on the ships can use a random pattern generator to adjust the field size and thus the speed of the light as it passes. The personal shields are not so advanced. Use a polarized lens that omits light at a specific wavelength and you will see a "hole" in 3 dimensional space where the light simply disappears in the lens.

Shell: You're serious aren't you?

K: Deadly serious.

Shell: What is the frequency?

K hands Shell what looks like a pair of barely darkened sunglasses.

K: Here is a prototype. Make as many as you like. But now I must go. I am being summoned.

K looks around the room once more and stops to look at Shell

K: Shell, you are wise to not trust the Captain at this time. I can say no more. Watch him and you will find the answers you seek.

And in a completely silent moment, K simply disappeared

On her break Kanani makes her way to Counselor Troi's quaters. Her experience earlier on sensing something strange continues to bother her and she feels compelled to have a chat with Troi. On her way, another odd feeling comes upon her and she stops and leans on the wall for a second. For some reason she senses a strong presence. She gains her composure and continues on.

K dissapears and Shell exits the equipment room abruptly, immediately bumping into Kanani.

Shell: Hey you need to watch where...

Kanani: Pardon me Commander.

Shell: Oh it's you.

They both walk in the same direction.

Shell: Are you on your break? Cause I could use something refreshing right now (almost issuing a command to Kanani)

Kanani: Yes Commander I am. But Ten Forward is open so if you need something.

Shell: Ah but I heard that YOU make a great Green Telio.

Kanani: Well, perhaps next time Commander. I am on my way to meet with someone. Good luck on the rest of this mission.

Kanani turns the corner. Shell slows down and is a bit irritated. Just who does she think she is? Something is fishy about this Kanani. She doesn't act like any ol' hostess she has ever known. If she gives me an attitude again, I'm going to tell her off. Perhaps I should d a little research on this one.

The conversation with K and the run-in with Kanani, along with the conversation with the Romulan prisoner, it's all left Shell a bit...preoccupied.

Don't trust Captain Nemo? Shell wonders why K said that. And why K is insisting that the the Romulans are the ones in danger. This needs more investigation too.

She looks at the cloaking detector device in her hands and smiles. She knows the Captain devised some of his own, but surely they're not as good as THIS one.

She watches Kanani disappear down the corridor, and decides that maybe following her for a bit might be warranted. Shell is very good at hiding herself and following discreetly without being noticed... Maybe a little *too* good. Something tells her that Kanani is hiding something, and she intends to find out what...

Shell slowly steps back down the corridor, following Kanani's shadow.

Kanani reaches Counselor Troi's quarters and walks in. Shell looks at the cloaking device and is feeling a little adventerous. She can start her research now. Why wait till the mission is over? Shell taps her communicator.

Shell: Shell to Ingersol

Ingersol: Yes Commander.

Shell: Are you still running the cloaking scan?

Ingersol: No Commander, the ship is cleared and the Captain has ceased all scanning at the moment.

Shell: Thank you. Commander out.

Shell looks around to make sure no one is around and engages the cloaking device. On herself.

Kanani enters Troi's quarters.

Kanani: Hey girl. Thanks for seeing me. I know that we are in the middle of an important mission.

Troi: No problem Kanani. You know I'm here for you anytime. So how have you been doing on the ship so far?

Kanani: Surprizingly well. It's been tough, being back on a Starship...brings back so many memories.

Troi: Yes I bet it does. But I cannot tell you how happy I am to see you here. I know you don't want to hear it Kanani but...

Kanani: Leanna. I miss her so much. I still can't believe she is dead. Kanani sheds a tear and Leanna gives her a hug.

Troi: I know sweetie. I miss her too. The entire Federation misses her... Well, at least the people who knew who she was. Your mother was a brave woman and a wonderful cap...

Troi stops speaking and senses another presence in the room. Not sure, she continues on

Kanani, I know you are here about something else too. What is it?

Kanani: Yes, remember six months ago, right when the Federation approached me to serve on the USS Debit Card? Well until now, I have had some strange experiences, almost sensing things... as if I knew when something is going on. Even with certain people I can sense things. I don't understand it.

Troi: Well you have experienced much stress for the past few years Kanani. Perhaps it's a chemical reaction to the stress? Have you seen a doctor?

Kanani: I have but they couldn't conclude anything. Then I tried praying about it to see if it's spiritual. It could be but yet, it seems like something else. It's as if I had the same abilities that you have.

Troi again senses a presense in the room.

Troi: Hold on Kanani. Troi grabs her phaser.

Shell sees that Troi is pulling out the phaser, and decides now is the time to do some quick thinking. She can't actually leave the room, since the doors would open as she was exiting and indicate her presence. Instead, she decides to do something a bit unorthodox. She steps a safe distance away so as not to be hit by any incoming phasers, and disengages the tracking device, revealing her presence to Leanna and Kanani.

They jump back in shock.

Shell: Good. You're safe.

Kanani: What are you DOING here?

Troi: Were you SPYING on us?

Shell: The Captain has a device to check for personal cloaks, but I have reason to believe it is not entirely accurate or reliable. I needed to make sure that SOMEONE on this ship could sense a cloaked presence if a device did not detect them. And Leanna, you are the only one I know who could be capable of doing that. I had to do it this way to make the test authentic. My apologies.

Troi looks at Shell warily. Shell glances back at Kanani with a smile.

Shell: Don't worry. I wouldn't have stayed around to eavesdrop on a personal conversation. Once I realized it was heading that way, I was going to leave, whether Troi sensed me or not.

With a wink, Shell leaves the room.

K is standing in a dark void of what may be a room, but there is no telling where or when K is standing. There is a single light shining on K but with no discernable origin. He just seems to be illuminated from everywhere and nowhere

Disembodied Voice: Did you give the prototype to the humans?

K: Yes.

Disembodied Voice: Do you think they will make more and use them?

K: One can only hope. They already found a way to detect the personal cloaks.

Disembodied Voice: You need to ensure they do. They must do this for their own good. But not now, you must leave for Romulus immediately. There is trouble. Seek the one called Austone. It appears the Romulans are getting cold feet about this recent event.

K: But what of Captain Nemo?

Disembodied Voice: Leave him to the others. He is not your concern. But after you find Austone, you will know what to do. Return to the Debit Card and seek out Troi. Her memory of the Volgese incident needs to be unlocked now. It is not yet time for the Federation to unravel enough evidence to see what is about to happen. We can only point them to it. We cannot make them see it or accept it.

K: I understand... One more thing. Shell. She doesn't trust me.

Disembodied Voice: Well should she?

K smiles, and almost laughs.

K: I suppose not, the K Continuum is not exactly known for being up front with the lesser races.

Disembodied Voice: As it should be. Even we are not allowed to know all things. Only what we are shown.

K: True.

Fade to black

K is standing in the corner of what appears to be a library. It is quiet. A few Romulans are seated at tables looking through ancient manuscripts.

At a table near K there is a very old Romulan leaned over an even older tome of considerable size.

K projects the image of a Signarian mouse scurrying across the table to the floor to the corner where K is standing. The old man's gaze followed this imaginary mouse until he spotted K.

Austone: Why do you bother an old man K? What business have I with you? Are you here to now steal my soul as you once stole my family?

K: You are mistaken old man. I am not the one you speak of.

Austone: Oh? Hmmmph. You all look alike to me. What do you want?

K: I was sent. I think you know why?

Austone: Of course I know why! You and your arrogant brothers or sisters or whatever you... things are! But why now?

K: There is trouble. We need to talk. Actually you need to talk. I assume you have prepared. You have had 60 years to think about it.

Austone: Yes. I thought about it and I don't like it. But it is for Romulus. I know that now. But what I am about to do, I did not choose to do. Your lot forced me into this. You ruined my life. You stole my life... all of you.

Austone looks distantly and his face drops somewhat

Austone: You... stole my love.

K: Again old man, that was someone else. You were chosen for this and you accepted it 60 years ago.

Austone: (Angrily)Yes I accepted it! What choice did I have? You would have killed me.

K: You made your choice. You knew this day would come. We just had to push up the schedule a bit.

Austone: A bit? This should not be happening at all. At least not for years! I hate you K, and all your kind. But I know it is for Romulus. Very well... I will go see the Admiral now. He needs to know first.

K: No, you will not see the Admiral at this time. He is involved. The next in line is Dulcina. Tell her what she must do.

Austone: Fine, fine. Whatever. My life is over no matter who I tell. Good bye K, may I never have to see your ugly face again.

K: May it be as you say. If I have to come back, you will know what it means to see ugly.

And K simply vanished in silence.

Austone sat at the table. He put his hands to his face and tears streamed from his eyes.

Austone: My dearest Marzana, I shall see you again. Perhaps even today.

Nemo and Turnel enter the brig and cross to the holding cell with the Romulan who was captured on the BEACON. The Romulan stands in the middle of the holding cell erect and proud.

Romulan: Are you here to torture me also, Federation?

Turnel: What do you mean?

Romulan: Why should I answer the question of a Federation puppet?

Nemo: If there were a puppet here and you ansered the question I would have you examined, however, since there is an Ambasador of your homeworld, I expect you to answer the question. What do you mean torture you also?

Romulan: One of your crew was here just a few minutes before throwing me around the cell, forcing information from me?

Nemo: Who?

Romulan: A female, with only three of those stupid circles on her collar.

Nemo walked over to the computer monitor and punched in a few codes, A small picture of the holding cell appeared on the screen. Nemo watched for a few moments, then tapped his com badge.

Captain: Nemo to Commander Shell, meet me in my ready room in ten minutes.

Shell leaves Troi's quarters and her communicator beeps:

Nemo to Commander Shell, meet me in my ready room in ten minutes.

Troi and Kanani look at each other.

Troi: I don't buy her story. She was obviously spying on us Kanani. What is with this Commander?

Kanani: Yes, I understand what you mean. I can tell that she has a very strong ego. But we don't know her Leanna or her history. All I know is that the Captain has quite a challenge up his sleeve.

Troi: I hope she didn't hear any of our conversation.

Kanani: Well, the main thing is that you didn't say anything about me being a former Commander. If anything, I really don't want people on this ship to know that. I can't deal with people knowing right now.

Troi: Understood. But these visions and senses you said you have been having. Keep tabs on them and if they continue for at least another week then come and see me again.

Kanani: Thanks Leanna. You are really special you know that? My mother would've been proud to see you. Well, gotta get back to Ten Forward.

Nemo walks over to the holding cell once again.

Captain: We know you were on the BEACON, and we know two of your comrads beamed over with my awayteam. Now, how many more of you are aboard the BEACON?

Romulan: Why should I tell you?

Captain: Because I'll find them, we know how to detect your cloak, if you tell me they might live, otherwise, I'll instruct my security team to kill all of them, or I'll just blow up the ship.

Romulan: (looking at Turnel) You can't let him do that.

Turnel: I'm afraid I have no power in matters of the Federation. If the Captain decides to destroy one of his own ships, he can do that, and he has the authority to order his security team to dispose of any intruders on Federation Ships.

Romulan: There were eight of us total, but we are not what you think.

Captain: What I think will have to wait. (Nemo taps his com badge) Nemo to Roc. You are looking for five Romulans who may or may not be cloaked.

Roc: Understood, Captain. We have secured the Bridge and Deck one.

Captain: Including the Jefferies tube and service ways?

Roc: Yes sir.

Captain: Good. Shut down life support to all the decks below deck one. Let's see if that drives them out.

Roc: Aye sir.

Nemo looks at his friend.

Captain: I'm afraid that I'm going to have to ask that you return to your quarters. I have a long discussion with my first officer to prepare for.

Nemo sat in his ready room, waiting. He had watched the video recording of Shell's movements from the time she left the brig to the time she left Counselor Troi's quarters. While he did not use the volume recording in the personal quarters, he did hear the conversation with K. The door chimed and he waited a moment more before he allowed it to open. Shell walked in and stood at attention before her Captain. Nemo glared at her, boring a hole through the back of her head with his eyes. Slowly, he rose from his desk.

Captain: If you ever question a detainee, prisioner, or guest again without my knowledge or permission, I'll bust you down to Ensign. If you ever touch a prisioner, detainee, or guest again, I'll throw you out the nearest air lock. If you ever threaten a member of my crew again, I'll have you scrubbing the deck for the rest of your life. Have I made myself clear, Commander?

Shell looked at her Captain with a look of shock. How did he know?

Shell: I was able to get important information...

Captain: You got nothing. HOw many Romulans are on board the BEACON?

Shell stood silently.

Captain: Why are they here?

Again Shell said nothing.

Captain: Nothing. (Nemo stood waiting to see if she would volunteer what she did know.) Again, in less than fourty eight hours we are having this discussion. Not only did you not listen to me, you are opperating as if this is your ship and you don't have to follow the orders of anyone. This time I am putting you on report, this is going into your permant record, and I'm seriously considering releaving you of your duties.

Shell: Captain, I have another way of detecting the personal cloaking devices.

Captain: REally?

Shell: Yes, sir. (she hands Nemo the sunglasses) These.

Captain: Sunglasses?

Shell: A special type of glasses made to detect the bending of the light used in all cloaking devices.

Captain: Where did you get these?

Shell: I can't say.

Captain: You're not on my good side right now commander, and I have no way of knowing if you are telling me the truth or not. Now where did you get these?

Shell: His name is K.

Captain: (Showing no emotion, no shock, surprise, astonishment, nothing) K.

Shell: Captain, I can't say anymore, but I trust that they work like I was told they would.

Captain: And I assume that you would put the lives of your crew in danger to test them.

Shell: They wouldn't be in danger.

Captain: I'll have to be the judge of that. I'll have Brenda analyze them to see if they'll work. I want you out on the bridge. Dismissed. (Shell exits the ready room and Nemo sits down. He touchs his com badge.) Nemo to bridge, what is the status of the Run-about?

Communications: We lost contact with them a few minutes ago?

Captain: How long ago?

Communications: About five or six.

Captain: And just when were you going to inform your Captain? (Silence) Never mind. Nemo out.

Nemo sat in his chair for several minutes contemplating what he needed to do next. When he refocused he noticed a woman, older, tall and proud standing in front of his desk.

Captain: Why now?

K: You needed me.

Captain: What is going on?

K: I can't tell you that.

Captain: No, but you can give my first officer a device that will help us detect personal cloaking devices.

K: That wasn't me.

Captain: I know.

K: You are stressed.

Captain: Gee, how can you tell?

K: You need to help the Romulans, and more than what you are doing now. There are many forces at work now, even within the K, that require a great deal of attention.

Captain: But you're not going to tell me about them, are you?

K: I can't, rest assured, I will be here, watching.

Captain: (Holding up the glasses) Do these work?

K: Yes, and they are easy to replicate. But they are the least of your concerns.

Captain: Sunglasses usually are.

K: Watch your first officer. She is strong willed and loyal to her own cause, but she will serve you well.

Captain: Not if I kill her first.

K: You are tired.

Captain: Excellent observation.

K: YOu have many things to do, make your decisions wisely.

And with that, K was gone.

Nemo touched his desk communications board,

Captain: Communciations, get me Starfleet command.

Before returning to the Bridge, Commander Lelandra Shell stops by her quarters. She steps into the darkened room slowly, cautiously.

Shell: Computer, lights up 20 percent.

She scans the room carefully.

Shell: I know you're here. You might as well show yourself and spare me the drama.

A mysterious man dressed in a dark black suit steps out from a shadow in her quarters. He appears to be in his 40s, dark black hair, and carries a very somber, authoritative look about him.

Man: I am impressed that you sensed me. We raised you well... If you're thinking of capturing me on the video screen, I've already disabled the sensors.

Shell: I know better than that, Sir.

Man: What have you learned?

Shell: K gave me a device to detect the personal cloaks.

Man: I'll send someone to get the schematics.

Shell: Apparently Captain Carroll is not who she says she is. Brain scans reveal she is ... not herself.

Man: We suspected that.

Shell: Is it someone surgically altered to look like her?

Man: No, it is Captain Carroll.

Shell: But if her brain scans...

Man: (interrupting) Captain Carroll is sick...

Shell: Meaning?

Man: I'm the one who is asking the questions here. What did you learn from the Romulan?

Shell: What you suspected. He claims the Federation attacked them. He claims they were forced onto the Beacon and only had the cloaks as a means to escape. He claims they are the victims of some type of slaughter attempt...

Man: Hmmm....

Shell: I hope you're not buying that drivel.

Man: You're smart Lelandra Shell - but too arrogant for your own good. We believe the Romulan.

Shell: Impossible.

Man: He is speaking the truth. It's worse than we suspected.

Shell: Can you elaborate?

Man: Of course not. For now, continue gathering information until I come back. And I may ask you to... take care of Captain Carroll.

Shell: No way.

Man: We haven't decided yet. But her illness could pose a grave threat to the well being of the Federation.

Shell: I am NOT your hitman. I'm part of the crew of the USS Debit Card and...

Man: You report to us FIRST commander, you know that.

Shell: I don't report to anyone first but myself.

Man: We created you Shell. You don't have much say in this.

Shell: You did NOT create me, you arrogant...

The man silences her with a look.

Man: Believe what makes you feel better about yourself. For now, gather information. I'll give you more instructions at our next meeting.

Shell turns on her heel and leaves her quarters, not bothering to say goodbye.

Kanani leaves Troi alone and moves quickly down the corridor.

K appears on the ceiling watching Troi.

Troi, now aware of his presence looks up and fires the phaser she was still holding.

K looks at the impact of the phaser and shakes his head. With his hand, he plays with the phaser's beam, rolls the energy into a ball and tosses it across the room where it dissipates harmlessly.

K: Now now. That was not nice. Do you alway greet your visitors this way?

Troi: Only the uninvited. I suppose you had to listen in.

K: I didn't have to, but I did.

Troi: Wait... There are 2 of you on board. Is that true?

K: Yes. Another K went to see Nemo. But I had to see you. I have to tell you something.

Troi: I don't think I want to listen to anyone from the K Continuum.

K: I think you will. Look at me Troi.

Defiantly Troi turns to face K.

K looks at her directly in the eyes.

K: I want you to remember what happened with the Volgese ambassador.

Troi looks vacant, and then as if suddenly aware of a corpse in her presence, she gasps and shrieks. She puts her hand to her mouth to silence herself and regain composure. She looks up to where K was standing but he was gone.

Nemo walks onto the bridge.

Captain: Status.

Communications: We still have no contact with the runabout.

Captain: What was the last known position?

Communications: About one hundred fifty kilometers from the ship.

Science officer: Captain, I'm getting a energy burst off of the starbord port forward.

Captain: Source?

Science officer: Unknown, but, there is an anommoly in the readings, There seems to be a ship of somekind between the source of the blast and us.

Captain: Red alert! Shields at full! Torpedos, wide spread minimum yield.

Weapons officer: Minimum yield?

Captain: I want to know who's out there first. Fire.

Torpedos ripped from the hull of the DEBIT CARD and found their target, a half sized version of a Romulan War Bird, and the runabout.

Captain: Sensors, try to pick up any life signs, engine room get a tractor beam on that ship. Communications, get me the runabout.

Communications officer: There's too much interfience sir.

Captain: Transporter room get the crew of the runabout out of there, engineering.

Brenda: Got it, Captain.

Science officer: Sir, I'm picking up eighteen to twenty five life signs, all faint, and all Romulan.

Captain: What happened over there? Shell, take a security team over there.

Shell rises from her seat and motions to the lead security officer on the bridge to accompany her.

Captain: And Commander, report to me before you make any decisions about changing my orders.

Part of the Romulan warbird's hull was compromised and the Romulan engineer barely brought the hull integrity sheilds back up in time to stop the total loss of atmosphere from the vessel.

Most of the crew were unconscious, several were seriously hurt. But the Romulan security officer was still on his feet and quickly finding anyone standing to prepare for a possible boarding.

With disruptor rifles in hand, 6 of them managed to get to the bridge to check on the status of their captain, who was seriously injured and unconscious as well.

Romulan security officer: The Federation ship fired on us! Rest assured they are planning on beaming aboard. Let us welcome our guests with smiles.

The smell of ozone from the arcing electronics and the acrid smell of smoke hung in the air. The Romulans were tensed and their eyes darted everywhere, looking for the first sign of a beam-in.

Shell: We don't know what we will find on that warbird but you know they are not warming tea for us! I want everyone on their toes!

Transporter Officer: I have a lock on what looks like an unoccupied corridor near their bridge.

Shell: That will do fine. Go in 2's people! As soon as we are beamed in I want that corridor secured. Phasers on maximum stun. Ready?

Young Security Team Member: Maximum stun commander?

Shell smiles sweetly, an obvious sarcasm.

Shell: Well, we must'nt offend the Captain's sensibilities now should we?

Transporter Officer: Ready commander.

Shell: Energize.

Austone walked slowly down a long dull government corridor. He was sullen and yet relieved that soon his long wait would be over.

He finally comes to the door of the Ministry of Archeology, Military Liason. He looks back down the empty corridor and sighs. Austone enters the office.

It was a typical Romulan beurocrat's office with the addition of some bizarre and questionable antiques. In particular there was a petrified head of what looked like a Klingon in a jar on a small table.

Dulcina: Austone, my dear old friend. Welcome. I don't often see you in this musty corner of my world. Please, have a seat. Tell me what could be so important that the great Austone, universal thinker and philosopher, should find the need to visit a simple sort like me?

Austone smiles the elderly smile of wisdom and takes a seat opposite Dulcina at her desk.

Austone: Dulcina, your words ring sweetly in my old ears. Yet I know what heart beats within you. And I know what it is you do... for the empire, of course.

Dulcina: (still smiling) But of course my dear friend, you know yourself, it is my duty and my pleasure to serve my glorious empire. But here, listen to me, I waste your time. Tell me, old friend, what can I do for you?

Austone: sighing We have trouble coming me dear Dulcina. A lot of it.

Dulcina: Now Austone, this is not the first time you and your philosopher friends have tried to scare Romulus into some action. I respect you Austone, but you need to be more specific.

Austone: Dulcina, there is a rebel faction right here on Romulus. Hidden, yes. But quite sophisticated, and well connected.

Dulcina: I'm listening, but I have heard myths of rebels on Romulus many times before. Proof will keep me interested.

Austone: About 60 years ago, I met someone from the K Continuum. This ... K ... showed me proof, to my own eyes, that what I speak of is true.

Dulcina: Now seriously dear Austone, that is simply not enough.

Austone: My dear Dulcina, he showed me what was really happening in the Volgese mines. I know what happened to the Volgese royal family.

Dulcina: (her face hard and her brow furrowed) Careful old man. Or you could be guilty of treason and I will end your life for you!

Austone: Dulcina, threaten me if you wish. Kill me. I tire of life. But if you want to know who leads the rebels now, I can show you proof.

Dulcina: Show me your proof now before I call the guards.

Austone produces a small data pad from his cloak and lays on Dulcina's desk. She picks it up and begins reading. A picture of a Romulan officer is displayed.

Dulcina: This is Chancellor Valahrie. Where did you get this?

Austone: I picked it up 60 years ago, from inside the Volgese mines.

Dulcina: And does his brother, Admiral Pataknus, does he know of this?

Austone: Oh yes. He is involved too, so it appears.

Dulcina: And what of this trouble you speak of?

Austone: They are planning a coup and looking for allies to support them so that the Romulan empire is not attacked while it is in its fragile state. They are seeking... questionable... allies.

Dulcina: Thank you Austone. You have been a very good and dear friend.

Dulcina pulls out a disruptor and fires it at Austone's chest. He crumples to the desk

Dulcina: Dulcina to security, that old fool Austone just tried to attack me. He is dead, come remove the body.
