And cheap doesn't necessarily mean in $$$. Most of the junk in stores is junk. A Manfrotto 3021BN is an excellent aluminum tripod for about $200-250. It can accommodate around 10 pounds of weight on the head. It's much better than some similarly priced tripods available in electronic/consumer good stores like Best Buy. Something like the Markins Q3 is an ideal smaller ball head for excellent support (not for long lenses).

So someday, after we sell the house and I convince myself that I really do need to spend some money on a cannon rebel (after this week's shoots, I wish I had one now for the distance / low light shots) is this the tripod that would give me the best bang for my buck? BTW, the head on my tripod is flat...what is a ball head?

LOL. My tripod and head (including Wimberly Sidekick) cost less than the camera body I use (that is, camera without lenses). You can always try sandbags. It's a popular alternative for stable support in certain situations.

This picture is not good photography by any means. . . but it is one of the most bizarre things you will ever see. Caution. . . not for the real faint of heart. . . and animal lovers (but it's still alive, I promise you!) Here

What was that that Ezri said about birds and natural habitate? WOW! Ezri, the shot of the statue, just begs to be messed with digitally. I do agree, it would have been more dramatic with a black background.

So you take Triss's photo, open it in Photoshop (or whatever), mask the statue and blur the background. Just like my avatar. That was originally a bunch of cut flowers in a vase.

Yeah, you definitely could have used a tripod there. I'll bet you got a "Slow Shutter Speed" warning from your camera.

You know I have never been able to grasp the "mask" tool. I have done layers with the magic extractor to get a similar effect. I have that statue (head & Lyre only) on my B&W Film. I need to PRINT IT and SCAN IT! ~ezri

I have started playing with the scanner- Here is the print formerly named "delicious" wrongly labeled "Butterfly" at the art show- but it worked. hehehehe. Here is the print formerly known as "Butterfly". Wrongly labeled "Delicious" at the art show. Don't tell the owner of the lips BUT I had to wipe lip prints off the glass when I took it down today. She would be mortified. ~ezri

Tex, this is the perfect place to ask this question: I agree that the value of the sunglasses and the rest of the face is too close for color. The avatar is clever. I would be tempted to see if you could select the sunglasses and try raising the yellow saturation. Ezri, thanks for scanning the photos... seeing the photos up close makes it easier to understand the story behind these two prints.

ORIGINAL: txhoneydarlin Off topic warning... How could I have gotten the sunglasses to show up better on her face in this pic, other than moving her to a sunnier spot? You need fill flash. Your subject was backlit somewhat and fill flash is needed to bring the exposure into more balance.

Here's a link to a terrific set of articles on lighting. Yes, it's geared for SLR cameras and yes it's more than most need. Still, a fundamental understanding of light and how to supplement/augment it will lead to memorable images.

Tx- I used the magnetic lasso tool in my adobe elements 5 -I dropped the photo in as 2 different layers -chose the 2nd layer and did the magnetic lasso around the glasses (this took some clicking) -chose the "sponge" tool, set it to Saturate and 80% then went over the glasses until they were the shade I wanted -Clicked off and then COPIED/PASTED the magnetic lasso area -I made sure my sunglasses had been pasted by themselves into a separate layer then deleted the second full image layer. -Then I selected the original photo layer and set the sponge to desaturate at 50% and went over the entire photo til I got it where I liked it. It sounds like a lot but it really took very little time. See results of the tongue photo --> HERE Let me know what you think and if you want the photo to come down. I just wanted to share how I had played with it. I am the kinda person that has to do it to be able to tell how it is done. ~ezri
