BTW, the soft focus around the pic can be done cheaply. If you get some clear protective lens covers, just smear a bit of vaseline on the edge of one. Or cut some pantyhose, with a hole in the center... that is the old fashioned way of doing things.

OH, and you still might need that flash on even a sunny day. Faces that have bright light behind them will look better with a fill flash.

As far as backdrops go, I have no clue how to make one stable and portable at the same time. So I spend some time just wandering around the subject observing the background a bit.

Vaseline gets all over the place. even when you are careful. I MIGHT try it with the K1000(knowing that there is very little to mess up there) but i do not want the stuff within 50 yards of my XTi- NOPE NO WAY!

Pantyhose. hehehehehe! I *ALREADY* get strange looks from folks and I do NOT have pantyhose attached to my lens. Besides I don't wear the things and the thought of them make me queasy.

Wall paper Background- I was thinking that there IS paper on a roll that you can get and use as a background but it is meant to be used and discarded when it gets torn or stained. I was wondering if i could smack the wall paper on some of that paper and roll it onto the tube??? Maybe???

We must take into account what we are snapping too.

I am finding that some of what I want to snap requires a tripod. The whole reason behind the el cheap'o light weight one I bought was for the brookgreen gardens trip with my class. ~ezri

Since I do a lot of video as well as stills, all my good tripods are of the barely luggable variety. So, I just picked up a Manfrotto Modo 785B, an extremely light tripod with built-in ball head. It's got a very low weight rating. But, it will work for what I need it for... something very small and light that might pass for a monopod in places that do not allow a tripod to be opened.

It's a little pricey and certainly not perfect; but, it works pretty well with the Canon XSi and even better with the Sony DCR-HC7 video camera.

Honey said- what do you want for mothers day

I said- Canon EOS Ds Mark III

~ezri

Oh, to be so fortunate!

Until last week, I was drooling over the Mark IIIs because of the LiveView capabilities as much as anything. But, the minute I heard that the XSi had LiveView, I opted to upgrade to that from the XTi. Having had live view with the Olympus E-10, prior to the XTi, I know how useful it is for macro work. I use a product called HeliconFocus that permits me to extend the depth of field of macro images by combining multiple images. But, it's a pain having to reset the focus through the viewfinder. LiveView is really the way to go.

I should be able to greatly improve on the results I get from the XSi's LiveView and HeliconFocus over this image that I created using the viewfinder of the XTi. Charles Krebs has set the bar high as you can see if you browse the HeliconFocus forums. He's costing me a LOT of money!!!

But, fortunately, I ended up not having to spring for a Mark III to get LiveView.

Let me say *WOW* on those big bug shots. All the hairy lil... let's say I am sufficiently freaked out.

Hope the XSi works out well for you. I won't be upgrading for a bit yet- I am enjoying PLAYING too much. My Honey seems to think I oughta be making money or something. *shrug* So i am content to covet the 1-Ds Mark III and play with toys like the Lensbaby et al.

I am thinking about buying some >10.00 filters and some clear fingernail polish to see if I can make some custom soft focus type filters too.

Charles Krebs is among the best, if not THE best, at what he does. Amazing.

Gotta play, how do you think mr. Krebs got as good as he did. People usta wonder why I didn't shoot as a business and I said, and lug all the equipment around and give up my weekends and try to sell more photos than people really wanted? Nah, I'll just shoot friends or make a couple of extra bucks here and there.

I used to work for Olan Mills waaaaaaaaaaaay back when. Took some nice portraits. Olan got to put his name on the picture, not me.

Anyone else out there a college student OR have a college student they can "use" to get a nice discount?

I just picked up Adobe Photoshop Lightroom for 99.98! HERE

and Nik Color Efex Pro™ 3.0 Complete Edition $299.95 for 168.95 HERE as well.

The Nik stuff is awesome- if you go to the NIK site and click the "lessons" tab then chose some of those video lessons to watch- wow- the one on white neutralizing *Falls over* if I wanted to make that dress white and leave the rest of the image warm I'd have to do a lot of work... he does it in like 3 clicks with the Nik color efex program. So my mothers day/birthday present just became software instead of the Lensbaby. I am thinking I'd like a nice laptop to put it all on now. Oh TRILLIAN....... Muhahahaha! She has my Honey's laptop in her possession.

I got BOTH programs for less than ONE program and that is even considering 3.00 quick student verification cost(you can email it or fax this proof in for free but it takes longer) the 20.00 UPS shipping option I chose.

Yuppers- Trill Graduates on the 30th.

Trill also has a Beau- who sent me a Mother's Day card... (GOLLY! I am getting old!)

Trill is also having to explain that she is NOT engaged- though she admits the young man in question HAS in fact asked her. She told him that over the phone was cheesy AND that he was not allowed to ask again, even in the proper manner, without having a chat with her poppa AND being able to back the offer up with a fairly quick I DO and take her home to support. So THERE!

I am wanting the software to come like RIGHT NOW it might get my mind off young men that are trying to ingratiate themselves to me by sending Mother's Day Cards....

i looked at charles kreb's site, and saw he has a few 3d photos up. if you want to have some more fun...you can try making these. all you do is take two shots of the same object with the same aperture offset horizontally by about a few inches. then put the two shots side-by-side in the final image using an image editor. when you cross your eyes to merge the two images, the object will pop out. if you mix up the right and left...you'll see an object that "pops in". here's an example that i shot a while ago:

3D candles

That whole Trill story is just too funny! Will Jerry be holding the shotgun while they have this conversation?

LOL ~ I received an email too. Not sure exactly what day my software will be here too, but it should be in the next few days.

Nik software is good. I use Nik Sharpener for most of my sharpening needs. I get the benefits of Viveza in Capture NX but I'd get Viveza for Photoshop otherwise. BTW, if you end up a member of NAPP (www.photoshopuser.com) you get lots of discounts.

I am thinking about setting up some lights tonight...

Which child to torture??? Why not ALL SIX!

RE: shotgun. Scary thing is--- this young man is a civil war re-enactor and he has 5 guns from that era of US history, another 2 that would be WW 1 or 2, plus the family guns that they have for putting animals down and shooting salt shot at critters that sneak into their pasture that are not wanted... SO seeing as Jerry cannot lawfully bring his assigned Military weaponry home and us having one shotgun and one bb gun, I think it safe to say Jerry is out gunned on this one.

Now just think... if a certain young man were to marry a certain young lady, you could call them up and have them visit and torture SEVEN!

I only tortured 2. the lights are HOT when you are not good enough at setting them up so 2 is enough. I ended up with 3 going. two big ones with the umbrellas and a spot on the hair. I did some not good on purpose so I have something to play with tomorrow.

as for the above post:

example #1

example #2

I have already begun the torture and he is still coming back for more. even with the "eyebrow" going in example #2

We had muskets in our civil war! They have a re-enaement here (where I live) now and again.

shadows...

lemme tell ya- that shot was miserable. a bit blurry up close, underexposed, grainy, white balance all messed up (I am learning about custom white balance feature on my camera and making mistakes) But, like you, I loved the expression so I tried to save it. perhaps the NiK software will help it out better than my current software.

as for how long I tortured him/them? He got here about 4pm and left at 10:30pm.
