I have the camera set on a tripod, with a remote clicker so I can stand inside the door for safety. So far, I can't click fast enough to catch the lighting, and in full dark with long exposures, I just have not been able to do it.

If it's night, just leave it open til the lightning flashes. That's how I shoot fireworks all the time. Just lock the shutter open and wait.

Didn't read the whole thread, but just curious ...

Does anyone make a bit of money with their camera? I really want a nice DSLR (say, Nikon D300) but don't think I can justify it unless it can somehow pay for itself. And that's really all I aspire -- to pay for the camera. Beyond that I don't care. [:)]

I do hope to take some trips through remote territory someday, perhaps taking LOTS of good pictures there would do it?

The only money I ever make is in weddings.....and I've begun to add an hourly charge as well. It's just too draining to spend a good 12 to 14 hours for a set fee.

I haven't made any money from photos. I have given photo shoots to very good friends as a wedding gift, etc.
That is why I don't have the SLR I look at now and then. I just can't justify the money for a hobby at this point. Perhaps in the future I'll save up for it. The thing is, to get money for photos you almost have to have the more powerful camera. I recommend atleast paying for it cash. No sense in going into debt for it.

I'm not gonna touch wedding photography. [:)] I'm sure peoples' expectations are sky-high.

I *might* get into budget wedding videography, but that's a slightly different topic.

I do want to do nature/scenic pictures, and it makes sense that one would need a better camera for that. That might make me spring for the D300 at some point instead of a cheaper model.

Actually, for landscapes, it isn't so much the camera but the tripod and tripod head that makes the best images. Remote release is a great investment, too. For shots of animals then definitely more performance from the camera is needed.

the tripod thing is funny. when talking to pros and serious hobbyists, in nature photography, tripod is a mark of seriousness.

for wedding and portrait pros, it's a sign of amateurishness.

Depends on where those wedding photos are taken. Some of them need tripods for the set shots. Obviously for indoors that isn't always possible or desirable. Of course, if we could get wedding photographers away from using P mode...

the big buck pros from my extensive reading, use tripod for ceremony shots
IF their fast glass can't handle the low light. everything else appears to be handheld. the photogs i'm reading def NOT using program mode.

I use a remote release, and spot metering.
I did pick up some good tips at the websites others here provided. So the next storm that brews, I will give it a shot again.

As far as making money goes, a guy in our local camera club works part time for a detective service.
He gets nice money, but I suppose you really gotta like photographing from motel parking lots.[sm=icon_smile_yikes.gif][sm=icon_smile_faint.gif]

Not my cup of tea!

Art shows are another way to make a few bucks. I've sold a few of my photos to people who saw them in shows.

wow the thread was hopping this past weekend eh?

Tooney, I can crop the image in closer- All of the shots that she loved in the other set were the 3/4 shots.

We went to the mountains(NC) to do my eldest's graduation ceremony and stayed at lake lure as always---

I sat in the van and promised myself as we drove past all the barns and lovely landscapes that come November I am going to STOP and take some of those photos I have rode past for the last 3 Novembers.

Okay- so I have done (and still have another 4-6 images I want to smooth out as I did the others) the shots of Ms. deR those are more or less freebies. If I get any cash it will only be 20-30 for the sitting fee over the cost of the images and then only because I do not wish to insult her parents by refusing the money more than twice... and they know which car is mine and would cram it under the wipers...

My sister works at a children's home and a couple of her kids are wanting senior shots done. My sister keeps close tabs on the flickr page as it is one of her connections to her nieces and nephews. She came across the senior shots and shared them with the young ladies and they want me to bring my camera and such when we visit my sister next week. My sister said that if her girls could pay a $20-30 dollar sitting fee and then buy the images at my cost and the sitting fee the group home would give me a form that I can use to write off the expense of my gas and the remaining fees involved on my taxes. They have priced the senior sessions and a 1 hour sitting with 2 venues costs between 100.00 and 150.00 sitting fee + the price of the portraits. Listen folks she had it all figured out--- down to the tank of gas and the actual cost from the other studio and gave me a number- OUCH!

I told my sister that all sounded good and fine but I was not a "business"... no license or anything yet. She fussed and said my business manager was failing at his job then. Seriously- how much charity work would I have to do before I could write off all my expenses and have my fun photography be free? Can it be done? I could go for that. [8D]

I think you have to turn a profit after a few years of the IRS considers your small business a hobby and all write-off disappear. But I am not a tax lawyer.

I think the idea of a sitting fee is a good idea. That pays for your services and a cd. They can shop around on their own to find a good deal on printing. I would include on a bill-of-sale that they get rights to the work but you maintain copy write and the opportunity to use their image in the future. You can be trusted, right?!?

Oh, another way to make a few dollars. This is the 2nd summer I am teaching photography in a summer art camp. I taught digital to middle schoolers last summer (oh, look what happens when we play with "fliters") and it was delightful. I turned that over to the assistant I had last year. He loves it. Last year and this year I am teaching film photography to elementary school kids. They use disposable cameras because they drop them and leave them on the playground, etc. First week they listen to concepts about good photos, then shoot an assignment, then on Friday we have all the photos developed. The 2nd week we crop, mat and scrap book. One ends up in a nice frame. I have some kids who liked it so much last year, they are taking it again this year.

I did not think I could write it off- it would be nice if I could but...

It'd also be nice if I could get a couple of "jobs" that would pay for my Glass Addiction ya know. I have been coveting Macro lenses lately. Glass is not cheap.

YEEHAW! We are expecting storms with vivid, dangerous, sky- to -ground lightning in about an hour!!

i was disturbed to find out lightening can come through a window. boo hoo.


we get predictions of lightning storms every summer and very few of them actually materialize. and we live in a micro climate. the storms come right toward us and then when it looks like two minutes till overhead, they turn and curve into town. heartbreaking.[:D]

EEk, we had rain, thank God. And late enough that it got to soak in and not evaporate. I was in bed for the 2nd thunderstorm so didn't get any photos.
