wow, I love the "playing with fire" she put up! That is thinking outside of the box.

And, did you notice that it was shot with a 7.5mpx Casio... not an expensive SLR. An inexpensive camera in the hands of a creative mind can produce wonderful images. In this case, it is the 'collection' and narrative that provides that special touch.

The sensor on my Nikon needs cleaning. A spot appears on any landscape shots I take with the sky in the background.[:@]

Is this something I should undertake myself with a kit? I keep hearing horror stories.

TMeeks -> RE: Flash Chat (7/22/2008 3:51:42 PM)

You might want to try this first. Giottos Rocket Air Blower

Then, I'd check the dpreview.com forums for your particular camera to see what others are doing about sensor cleaning safely.

playing with photos = stress relief for me

I took a couple of my worst shots and applied some artistic filters to them to try to make um better or at least presentable.

Allan

Harrison

(they are with the band and do not mind the advertisement [;)] they are going to Sturgis next month with second chance music ministry) The photos were made in low light w/o flash in a small coffee house that was standing room only. I opted for no flash because of the elbow to elbow situation. I did not want to blind folks. The shots of Harrison were taken with the camera either on a chair back set to timer to reduce camera shake or on a stack of books on a table. The shots of Allan were done hand held before I decided to use the books and chair. They are a couple of outstanding young men not to mention easy on the camera lens. [;)]

I also goofed off with a shot of Trill that set me in the mind of the White Witch of Narnia. I made her look REALLY white witchy.

The White Witch (Trill)

then there is a photo of a photo of me in my wedding gown. it is really bad. BUT A pal wanted to see it so I played with it and posted it. Doing that did get me to thinking about the man that took the image so i did a web search and found him. he said he believes he still has my negs and proof sheets and he'd sell um to me at a discount since it was uncle Sam that lost my originals. [:D] hehehehe! So I call him back in 6-8 weeks(he is in the middle of the season you know) THEN I take my negs to Class in August and beg my Prof to show me how to scan them into the computer and drop them onto my external hard drive so I can order some re-prints!

I had thought of offering some challenges on Crosswalkers on flickr. The latest one is cemetery angels but ya know, making portraits like those you fixed up for the kids is a great idea, too. I've done that with plants but not teens.

ezri -> RE: Flash Chat (7/25/2008 2:05:21 PM)

<--- I put my white Witch of Narnia Av up. Oooo if looks could kill.

I think she was growling at the brother who was quickly stuffing leaves into her hair at his mothers insistence.

that is what inspired that look? That is wonderful! [:D]

PolarBear -> RE: Flash Chat (7/27/2008 5:39:11 AM)

Got a halfway decent close-up of a bee yesterday at the local botanical gardens. Its wings are in fairly good focus. Definitely need to take my tripod next time. And I accidentally had my camera set at ISO 1600. Doh! Fortunately the noise from the XSi isn't too bad.

TMeeks -> RE: Flash Chat (7/27/2008 8:42:15 AM)

Download the Noiseware demo. www.imagenomic.com

The XSi is the least noisy camera I've ever owned. But, even so, Noiseware is an amazing product.

Here's a link if you want to see. It is 3.5MB and has already been cropped.

http://yoderdev.com/photos/080725-bee.jpg

Printed on a 4X6, noise is not even noticeable. Impressive for 1600 ISO.

Probably would have been clearer had I used a tripod. But I think it's still a good shot. My mother in law (here visiting) loves it!

PolarBear -> RE: Flash Chat (7/28/2008 2:20:36 AM)

And here's a rose shot that I think is decent. Also taken at an accidental 1600 ISO.

http://yoderdev.com/photos/080725-rose.jpg

Shrunk, not cropped.

Both this and the bee were taken with the Canon 100mm USM macro lens.

TMeeks -> RE: Flash Chat (7/28/2008 11:25:46 PM)

You've got a steady hand! Nice job. :)

*Dances Around the Photography Thread*

I got paid 40.00 for my ministry shots. My reward to myself for actually letting go of some photos is:

A custom camera strap!!!

I got to chose 2 fabrics and am getting the strap an extra 8 inches long.

Fabric #1 here

Fabric #2 here <-- the Pink Coriander in that shot, not the paisley back side.

I am soooo excited!

A strap that will be long enough and be PRETTY!

if there is plenty of light, then the noise will be very minimal. the noise in ISO1600 will usually show up more in low light situations. but even then, my 30D handles the noise very well.

really the only kind of noise that bothers me is the chroma noise. luminance noise looks more natural, like a "texture" to the photo. theres an easy way in photoshop to fix chroma noise. first i duplicate the background layer, and choose noise > median on the top layer (through one of the menus, i forget), and set the pixels to about 10. could go less if 10 is too strong. then choose the blending mode between layers to "color", and the chroma noise should be significantly reduced or eliminated, leaving only luminance noise behind. this takes maybe 15 seconds, depending on how fast of a clicker you are.

just be careful, because this could de-color some sharp colored corners of thin colored lines in the photo (i.e. signs with text). when this happens in my photos, i'll try to un-select those areas, so the median blurring misses those areas.

is anyone here into food photography?

im trying to be for a year or so now...and i need help! haha.

bluestone -> RE: Flash Chat (8/8/2008 9:03:59 AM)

I know that with food you use background lighting. expensive.

I thought about that some. Perusing the pro forum on dpreview.com gives one the impression that to do food photography, you need to pretty much hire a food stylist to make it look top shape. And they basically mix inedible things with the food to achieve that end. [:'(]

Background lighting? Dunno about that. I'm sure you need good lighting but I don't see why it has to be anything particularly expensive.

Earlier this year I got a Fotodiox set with 9 daylight balanced bulbs, a softbox, and a stand for about $250. I suspect two or three of those from different angles would be fine for food. Maybe even just one if the gig isn't high end.

bluestone -> RE: Flash Chat (8/8/2008 11:09:19 AM)

that's what I am talking about. two or three for $250.00 a pop may not be a lot to you, but it is pretty pricey to me.

car2ner -> RE: Flash Chat (8/8/2008 2:35:18 PM)

Gotta do the "tricks" use frozen butter but make sure the edges are soft enough to look warm and melty, for instance.
Do you have an example we could play with?

Well it is to me too. I'm not (yet?) a pro photographer.

But really, that's dirt cheap by pro lighting standards. You can *easily* spend thousands of dollars for lighting sets.

Of course it depends on whether you want to photograph food as a hobby or to make money. If a hobby, sure it's probably expensive. If to make money, it's an investment that needs to be made.

I actually got that Fotodiox set for video work, but it's proving nice for photography too.

ChiefWannahakaloogie -> RE: Flash Chat (8/11/2008 3:06:19 PM)

i actually don't do anything to the food i photograph. i'm a baker/chef and i've always loved photography, so the last year or so i've been getting into photographing the food i make. i have a blog where you can see some of my stuff, the link is in my signature. i usually photograph my food right when it's finished, so it already has that fresh look that is desired.

for lighting i mostly use natural light, as my kitchen has plenty of it during the day. when i use artificial lighting, i use my mom's Ott light that she bought for like 5 bucks at a yard sale [8D] it's supposedly the closest you can get to natural lighting with artificial lighting. as i said, most of the shots i take are with natural lighting, but i have used the ott light and i have been pretty happy with it so far.....

i need help with backgrounds though. i don't have alot of space to set anything elaborate up, and even if i did i have no idea where to start. any ideas?
