Yes, I felt that way about some of them (the eiffel tower?).

This an update of the 7 wonders of the ancient world chosen by Philon. I think all but the pyramids at giza have been destroyed. They were all man-made objects. I think they have a wonders of the natural world too but I can't tell you what they are.

I thought Stonehenge was a cop-out. There are other stone monuments of that kind but it just happens to be well publicized. I guess I don't think it's that unique.

But hey, we're all different.

I'm pretty sure Niagara Falls and the Grand Canyon are in there. That's all I can think of. Maybe Mt. Everest?

I can't take Stonehenge seriously, thanks to Spinal Tap. Nothing really awe-inspiring or magical about it.

I'm late to the conversation, but don't they have little coffee pots or some sort of heater-uper that you can plug into your cigarette lighter?

Uh....I don't know. I don't think my car has a cigarette lighter. Or cupholders. So I don't do much in my car except DRIVE, like one is supposed to.

I saw a commerical for a car the other week that has a heated and cooled cup holder. So you can have hot coffee, or cold tea in your car.

Too bad we can't do something about the children being sold as sex slaves, the drug addicts, or the mentally ill.

All we need is fourteen lines, well, thirteen now,
and after this one just a dozen
to launch a little ship on love's storm-tossed seas,
then only ten more left like rows of beans.
How easily it goes unless you get Elizabethan
and insist the iambic bongos must be played
and rhymes positioned at the ends of lines,
one for every station of the cross.
But hang on here wile we make the turn
into the final six where all will be resolved,
where longing and heartache will find an end,
where Laura will tell Petrarch to put down his pen,
take off those crazy medieval tights,
blow out the lights, and come at last to bed.

-- Billy Collins

Too bad people aren't as malleable as metal and as conductive as silicone.

If we could 1)make permanent changes and 2)didn't have to get hurt/killed doing it I think there would be a lot more folks wanting to make a difference. Most of us are too selfish to do a Mother Theresa. We want to see that what we're doing (and giving up for it) are worth it. Not seeing a change burns us out and makes us feel wasted.

And on the lighter side--I got furniture! A plush chaise lounge. I used the couch money to get it. So now it's like I have a bed on both sides of the house.

I don't know about you guys, but I often feel desperate to "make a difference" or change something--anything--for the better. But there are so many bad things, I just get overwhelmed and go back to my life. Then I feel like a loser.

I was just talking about yeah, that is so true, so it's the little things, everyday, let people out into traffic, say thank you and please, give compliments to strangers, buy old ladies donuts, pick up trash on your way to the door at work, etc.

I tried to be "real" humanitarian, pass out blankets at Bosnian refugee camps, etc. - I'd love to go to Iraq, but they all want degrees. Or people with loads of money to pay their way. Which is fine, but I have a willing pair of arms! That's not worth some airfare?

I should have been a doctor for the Peace Corps. I should have majored in Psych, and specialized in adolescent females. I should have been an attorney, for child services, or a social worker. I should have been the youth minister I wanted to be so badly.

But I'm not.

And getting my new Adbusters today doesn't help.

geez woman, you ain't dead yet.

I sympathize though. I'm shocked that there aren't more (any?) organizations that provide airfare/food/shelter to people who are willing to work as volunteers indefinitely. If anyone knows of an organization that does provide that, hook me up. as long as it doesn't involve proselytizing or sponsorship. heh

I've gotten a more recent list, of South American volunteer organizations, via a group I'm in on couchsurfing.com.

I want to go to Romania and raise my legion of riot grrls, though...

I really understand this statement. I wish there was an online directory of volunteer services or a number you could call or something...and that some of them let you bring children.

Mostly I just assume that if my son's school won't let me bring a 2 and 4 year old along then they wouldn't let me do that at a volunteer organization. Yep, I hide behind my kids because I know how well (not) dh would take me volunteering during time he has to be home.

Mi, I know you would rather leave town but have you looked for stuff where you live? I've known people who built reputations volunteering and used that to get a job with a relief organization.

I'm sure there's stuff you could do at home. Knit bonnets for crack babies, assemble care packages for soldiers, etc.

I have, for literally years, now, been wanting to get involved with the rape crisis center. I managed to talk to the woman, but they weren't training again until several months from when I talked to her.

Otherwise, there's not much going on around here, I check the volunteer section of the free alternative weekly.

So, like my post that got lost, it's the little things. Pay for the next three coffees. Give a sammich to the homeless guy. Conserve water, ride my bike to work. Be kind to old ladies.

Except the cranky ones who call wanting to know why their grandchild's name was spelled wrong, oh, yes, it IS because I am an incompetant moron who doesn't know how to do my job. Yes, yes, it is because I am stupid, certainly not because we published exactly what the funeral home sent us...

I am so angry right now.

Some fascist in town has turned us in AGAIN for our vw bus. Some kind of abadoned and never used junk complaint. Its a camper people. It has no heat. We do not use it in the winter. It will sit in the driveway 99% of the time JUST LIKE YOUR CAMPER/BOATS.

Ugh. Thought I had this dealt with but now the village engineer is saying I said I would move it to prove it would work (which I actually offered to do but he said, "No, let's take care of it Monday" and then he didn't follow through so I figured he checked the plates and moved on) So now its our fault and he's sent the citation to the police.

Dh is talking to the police and we're going to have to jump through several hoops just to clear this mess up. I am not paying for a ticket or violation because that jerk doesn't keep notes of what he says on Friday and then believes on Monday.

I don't usually get this mad. He better not call me back anytime soon or I am going to take his head clear off. This is not the first time he has crossed me and I am done being polite and complascent.

It's in your driveway? So how the heck can somebody complain??

Keep a paper trail, when you talked to the guy who sat wait until Monday, get his name, number, time of conversation, etc.

Wow, that does look cozy! I'd fall asleep if I sat in it.

It lays back too. I'm not sure we've slept in our bed since they delievered it.

There is some kind of ordinance here where if a vehicle 'looks' unused or is not moved every 10 days you must get rid of it. We got ticketed for not having a license plate 4-5 years ago and we complied. We've had complaints but this is the stupidest one.

Is this a city thing, or can I give you a hard time for living in some suburban hell with a neighborhood association?

Can you park it in the yard and cover it with a tarp? Or fake flowers and call it art?

It's a small town of @ 1000 people in paper mill country (ie people hunt, fish, camp, have tractors, RVs, ATVs, etc). I'm getting flack from the city engineer/planner because someone is 'complaining.' I guess he's pledged to defend the municipal code until death. 'Really, its not my fault...the code says...'

I sure wouldn't think we lived in a place this picky. Half the men in town (or more) wear flannel, look scruffy, and probably wear a ballcap to church.
