Hi. For those among us who observe specific seasons during the year, for the sake of self examination, cleaning house as it were, and getting things back on track with the Savior, do you go about achieving that with prayer and making new directives for yourself, prayer alone, or don't really observe a time for such activity? I was on another forum this weekend, and from the various posts concluded we all "struggle" with something in life and are never really cured from the sin condition, but like the addict, we can daily decide not to slip, or sin - sinning loses its priority and we indulge in the pet sin-s that beset us. Just interest to know how you look at this matter. Thanks for sharing!

Hi drussell...

Sorry but I have to respond to your statement “specific seasons during the year, for the sake of self examination, cleaning house as it were, and getting things back on track with the Savior”.

If we belong to Christ and His laws are written in our hearts as stated that the Spirit will do in the new covenant; the process of self examination and repentances is a daily occurrences. If not, we are not really walking in fellowship with God.

The whole meaning of Gods laws written in your heart means that our sense of right and wrong has been renewed and sin is immediately disclosed to us. Without immediately repentances we are just plain out of step in our walk with God and our life suffers. How could one wait six weeks or whatever period to ask forgiveness?

Just my perspective but I’m pretty sure I’m correct.

Bob

I understand where you bot are coming from, Drus & Bob97, we should be examining ourselves with the mirror of the Word of God and make the needed adjustment in our lives on a day-by-day bases.

I do notice that during this season, there is a greater burden to deal with and repent of some things in my own personal life. Which is significant because the fall feasts are around the corner. However, if we are constantly seeking to grow everyday, then we don't really need a season to get us on our knees repenting. Bob97, you make an excellent point!

Bob and LBolt, thanks, agree with your points. If we are at it daily, we shouldn't need a season for repentance. I may just do a google search on where things like Lent, annual revivals, and the Jewish period called ELUL originated. Still open for any others who want to comment, thanks.

Interesting that you start this thread on the 2nd of Elul, which marks the month before the High Holy Days of Feast of Trumpets and the Day of Atonement. This is to be a time of introspection, prayer, repentance and restitution.

While it is good to repent often, even daily if needed; it is also good to take time to make sure you have covered all your bases, repented of all you have done wrong in the last year.

Repentance and confession should come as soon after the sin as the Holy Spirit reveals the sin to us; be that summer, winter, autumn, or spring.

Applying the following verses;

(2Co 13:5) Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?

Should happen anytime that our actions fall outside the following guidelines;

(Gal 5:22,23) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

I think if we "Hold" our sins, and "Gather up" the things that need to be attended to in our lives (forgiveness, restitution, etc.) for a particular time determinate on a calendar; then we miss the teaching of the New Testament.

Thanks
RC

I agree RC.

I also see the value in going back and making sure we didn't miss something on a regular basis.
