Should Christians share and laugh about tasteless jokes?
I was forwarded a joke by another Christian that in it included trivial attitudes, even making light of the act of beastility. Am I wrong to be offended? I requested that this person not forward anymore such jokes to me, to which this person responded that I "need to lighten up" and that we should be able to enjoy a joke for just that - a joke.
Please give me your opinion.

I don't think I would tell a joke to someone unless I knew they were okay with it. Don't want to make my brother stumble, and such. However, I don't think there's one standard of humor that is universal. Everyone chooses their comfort level and by what they will be offended. There's nothing wrong with that.

Sounds like your friend was getting defensive. You were in a way telling them that they had bad taste in jokes. But to be honest, not everyone finds the same things funny! You can be plenty lighted up and still find a joke tastless and crude.
Just don't take their comment personally.

Ephesians 5:4 addresses this very matter.
"Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving."

Thanks for all of your feedback. I think I reacted to the joke quite strongly and we should always act with love, not taking offense. I wasn't quite sure how to react to this joke because I couldn't get past the part that included humor slanted toward having sex with an animal. Does it steal my joy that I am unable to laugh at this, as the sender responded, that enjoying a good gut buster is good for the soul? I don't think so. I enjoy being silly and am quite frequently. But, I think it's inappropriate to send such jokes. I do, however, admit that I am human and err a lot.

I wasn't quite sure how to react to this joke because I couldn't get past the part that included humor slanted toward having sex with an animal.
Jerry Seinfeld was once asked about the fact that he didn't use swear words in his act. He said that while he didn't have anything against swear words, he felt that their use was a sort of cheating or short cut.
Stand up comics who start to die on stage often revert to swear words, bathroom humor, or other tasteless offensive comments as if to get someone to titter or giggle at the brashness of a comment and hope the audience won't recognize that something inferior has been substituted for the comedy they paid to hear.
You are not wrong to ask that you be excluded from such "jokes" in the future. Your friend assumes that the problem is yours. You could respond by saying, "That's one theory. It may also be possible that your joke wasn't as funny as you thought, that it used embarrassment as a cheap substitute for humor, or that your threshold for being offended is a lot lower than mine. Regardless of which theory is right, courtesy would demand that you respect my wishes and refrain from future messages."

EEEk, or just do like m'love does. just say, "I don't get it" (of course he does). There is nothing more frustrating than trying to explain a joke. If it has to be explained, it isn't funny. After a few, "I don't get it"s the jokester will most likely quit.

I've actually used the, "I don't get it" response before. I think what bothered me the most about this matter was this person's "lighten up" attitude to my bringing out that the joke was tasteless in my eyes. I would have expected from a Christian an, "Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to offend you." Instead, I got "lighten up," and I'm, in a sense, allowing my joy to be stolen from me by not recognizing this humor and laughing at it when, in fact, everybody saw and appreciated the humor in it.
Well, perhaps I've gotten this off my chest. I do appreciate your comments about this matter.
