My husband and I have been invited to 5 weddings that are this month and next month. My husband was layed off for 6 months and we are trying to catch up $$$$ and float again. We really can't afford all these weddings. What is proper to do in this situation? Anyone have advice in this area? Sure would appreciate it.

How many of these weddings are relatives or really close friends and not the children of a person you work with or go to church with?

Certainly family and close friends will understand that you can send your love and come celebrate their union, but cannot afford a gift.

For a favorite niece, you might create a recipe book with grandma's best recipes or some premade dinners that can be frozen and pulled out during the first weeks of marriage.

Anyone who hasn't been living together might like a collectible Christmas ornament, homemade seasonal wreath, etc. Our Hobby Lobby (Christian chain of stores also online) has a gorgeous assortment.

I bet we can come up with lots of wonderful ideas.

If it isn't immediate family, just say no thanks. Where is it written that you must accept every invitation?

When we got married, some of my husband's family just sent us a card, no money or a gift. I appreciated that they thought of us and didn't think negatively at all about receiving a card, in fact I thought it was nice instead of feeling like we were being ignored or forgotten.

Sometimes when my budget is low, I get a $5.00 candle or a picture frame or something. Are any of these people registered? Do they have anything cheap on the registry? I also don't think $5.00 or $10.00 in cash or check is a bad gift at all. Do you enjoy any arts and crafts? Is there something you could make them (like a wedding X-stitch, and then make it into a throw pillow so you don't have to buy a frame)?

I think people in general appreciate gifts that come from the heart, homemade or something that may reflect the kind of people they are. I think materials for them to make a photo album or scrapbook of the event is nice as well.

As Miss Manners would say, a gift is not the price of admission to a wedding.

Allegedly, an invitation to a wedding is an invitation for close friends and family to share in the couple's moment--to witness their vows. Your presence and prayers for them are all anyone has the right to expect.

I am assuming that anyone who knows you well enough to invite you to their wedding also knows your situation. Do not worry about it.
