We will be traveling that day so I guess what ever is on the menu at the restaurant we choose. Good luck with the pie.

We're having the 4th Annual Lovely Family 4th of July Party on Friday! We maxed out two years ago at 80 people! I think we have about 60 RSVPed for this year (about half are kids)! I've got soooo much to do this week to get ready but it's always so much fun!! We're doing burgers and hot dogs and people are bringing anything and everything else you could imagine, I think.

(I may live in Texas, but I have no idea what those things are....) There are many variations of Texas caviar, but generally it consists of black-eyed peas, onion, bell pepper, tomato, cilantro, and dressing (vinegar and oil, or Italian)-- all mixed up and served with tortilla chips. It's better the second day once the flavors meld. There's only one Texas sheet cake, however-- the kind that starts with boiling both the batter and the icing. A staple at potlucks and such.

We are having: Smoked chicken and ribs Dressing (I know, but this is what my mother wants) Potato Salad Baked Beans (have you tried the Bush's Grilling Beans? my family loves them) Some other Veggie Rolls Lemon Pound Cake Rice Krispie Treats quote:
My wonderful DH is deployed to Iraq, so July 4th will be just another Friday for me. Do you ever send him pictures of what you are doing? I have had several family members in the service (or even out of town on holidays) and they all loved that we still got together while they were gone and took a picture of what we were doing and sent it to them. It didn't make them any more homesick than they already were and they kind of felt a part of what we were doing.

Know what? I am thinking about making it to take to my son's for his July 4th picnic. If I do, I'll make it, then sit back and watch them eat it. I'll giggle inside and wait until they pass judgment on it, then I'll tell them about it. You won't be sorry! It's scrump-dilly-ocious! quote:
Then later around the fire during the fireworks, we had peanuts in the shells, doritos, marshmallows and sour cream&onion rings. That reminds me, I'll have to ask if there'll be a fire. If so, I should take stuff to make s'mores. DH has never had them!?!?!

Wow, where is your DH from? I heard a trick one time, I haven't really had the chance to try it out though. Instead of roasting your marshmallow, pre-assemble the whole s'more, then wrap it in foil, and stick it over the fire that way. Sounds like a good idea. Not sure if it would work though. It would probably keep the marshmallow from catching on fire!!

Wow, where is your DH from? South Dakota. I asked if there will be a fire at this annual get-together tomorrow night, and he said yes, but he doesn't recall them ever making s'mores! What good is a fire, I tell you?! quote:

But me, I like blackened marshmallows , so I'll stick with the traditional method.

A fire without s'mores is a waste of burnable wood. The chocolate does melt nicely when you do it in the microwave. But the marshmallow doesn't taste quite the same as over a fire.

Well, I can't bake the cake for tomorrow (physical problems), but I plan to do it in the future. And I thought that if I baked it, we would have sunny weather. Well, it rained, thundered, and lightninged all night. I knew it! But it was fantastic. Washington doesn't thunder and lightning, but it was literally all night long. It was just plain nice.
